A member of the audience asked him where he got his wacky ideas for his novels of strange goings on in my home state of Florida. "Simple", says Carl, "pick up a newspaper!". Another Florida writer, Tim Dorsey, he of the 20+ novels featuring the serial killer Serge who only kills folks who harm Florida or Floridians and who dispenses Florida trivia as he travels the state with his drug addled partner Coleman, was also an editor columnist for the Tampa Tribune for a dozen years. So, I guess basically, the newspaper folks know where to find goodies. And Florida has lots of goodies as shown in this great book by Craig Pittman, yet another newspaper reporter and columnist. This book is a fun read but containing many serious events that occurred, some not too many years ago, others recent, some many years ago. Mr. Pittman, a native Floridian as is his wife and kids, covers his state from the pan handle to Key West. He writes from today to yesterday.. I ordered this book because I lived in Florida for nineteen years. Two of my children were born in Florida. I have traveled all over the state and go back every year to visit. Key West seems not to be in the United States, but in a foreign country. Traveling down the keys, so much sky, so much water, very little land. One man I spoke to goes on vacation every year to Florida. People don't wear too many clothes he says. But Florida does get awfully hot.The book contains eighteen chapters about different times, history, politics, hurricanes, weather, land plus so much more. Craig Pittman is a journalist, a reporter and a columnist for the Tampa Bay Times. He grew up in Pensacola, his wife in Sarasota. So many Floridians have moved to this state from other places. This state is a melting pot of people from other states, Canada, the Caribbean, French speaking Haitians, Cubans, others parts of the Americas, plus Europeans, Africans, others. Many different religions, Santeria being one.The quiet area around Lake Wales is nice, but the state is growing too fast, too much. The Everglades is being invaded by people building homes. Tourists come to Florida to see a place so different than their own home states. And to enjoy the warm weather. The Everglades looks so much like the earth must have looked before mankind came into being. Alligators, an ancient race of dinosaurs, still are so much in evident and swim around in the swamps. They belong here and have lived here long before people did.I learned much from Mr. Pittman's writing, so much about events I knew nothing about. Mr Pittman goes deep into his writing about Florida. He writes about how Disney World came into being, tells much about the politics of Florida. There are stories about crimes and criminals, education, segregation, plus so much more.This book is great, tells it like it is, humorous, serious, laugh out loud, but with many reasons to think.This is a good book for anyone who wants to know more about Florida. Mr Pittman covers much. A land of summer, of tourists, nightclubs, restaurants and water, water all around. It does attract strange people.

When I reached the last page, I wanted more.This is not a book full of goofy Florida stories, although there are plenty of those. It tells these stories from the Bad Old Days and links them with others of more recent times drawing themes and lessons from them. It is shocking to see how Senator Cruz or Governor Bush, two names n the news now, continue long traditions of folly that began in the Civil War era.Many of Florida's problems come from a frontier mentality and the fact most Floridians are from someplace else. The population lacks an 'institutional memory' so to speak. Folks who are not really from Florida see little reason to demand and pay for government services like health care, decent prisons or schools.Still there is wisdom in Florida too. Lots of smart cookies are from the Sunshine State, and good ideas like Sunshine Laws come from there.So it lets us see how Florida reflects the best and the worst of the US. Educational and amusing.

FRANCES MAYES is the author of seven books about Tuscany, including the now-classic Under the Tuscan Sun--which was a New York Times bestseller for more than two and a half years and became a Touchstone movie starring Diane Lane. I really wanted to like this book better than I did. It has its elements. It's about three women in their 60's who decide against retirement home living and decide to rent a villa in Tuscan. What a wonderful idea. They are all healthy, talented and have money. They are not dependent on their Social Security checks. They drop $1000 on old books without a blink of an eye, They cart home cases of wine and armloads of flowers. They are not worried about money at all. They fall into unique employment opportunities, take classes especially in Italian, spend time in town drinking cappuccinos and visiting with the locals, meet interesting men and live a wonderful life. It's very reaffirming and wonderful although the excess started getting to me a little (sour grapes perhaps wishing I was living like that). So what bothered me? It ambled and ambled. I finally narrowed down the problem. There is another couple already living there about 10-15 years younger than the women. They are already embedded. The woman is a famous niche writer and poet. She is writing about her former mentor in Tuscany, Margaret, another writer. And it's this tangent story that slows the story down. Margaret is not involved in the story and yet takes up copious amounts of space. This leads to my common complaint of the apparent lack of copy editors working now. A good one would have axed that story line right out and the book would have flowed so much better. Here's the other complaint. Most of the visiting Americans seem to come from the San Francisco area, known locally as the Bay Area. Apparently this is due to the wine connection. So I am happilyreading along when native Californians are referring to San Fran. This would NEVER ever happen. It is almost like a racial slur, fingernails on a chalkboard, an insult. This is such a marked error that it almost destroyed the book in itself for me. Please if you are going to San Francisco never say San Fran. It's just a glaring error This book had such potential and if someone with a red pencil had fixed the ambling it would have been wonderful. I am so ready for books that explore lives after 60.

What an absolutely great read that I enjoyed so very much! I loved getting to know the various characters and how each was developed. I must say, I smiled when I read the review by "ambles" where she mentioned these ladies had no financial worries because not one of them seemed financially challenged in the least. I loved "ambles" review though. I think I enjoyed this book so much because the ladies who moved to Italy are my contemporaries and what they did took "guts" if you will.Thank you Ms Mayes, I will probably read this again.

A perfect read to inspire listening to the voice that whispers of seeking adventure and opening to newness as we mature in life, rather than fading quietly into the background as ‘wise women’ are, many times, encouraged to do. This book will be a perfect gift to give my dearest friends. I found myself inventing excuses to avoid responsibility and keep reading because I didn’t want to come back from Italy.

One of the loveliest books I've ever read! The story had its predictable themes, but the characters were like people I'd want to know - admirable, talented, and perfect as friends. As they discover their true selves as independent women, they thrive and soar in the idyllic setting of rural Tuscany. And the descriptions of food, markets and cooking sent me straight to the kitchen with renewed inspiration. The text was elevated by wonderful snatches of poetry and classical references. It came to a conclusion as it should, but I was really sorry for it to end.

I have enjoyed the previous books by this author, but this was hard to read. It went off on tangents that were not contributory to the story line. Nothing that was written caused me to be drawn into the story that was contained. Please, do not waste time reading this! I kept waiting for it to get better, but it never did

I love Frances Mayes and love her more now that I am a woman “of a certain age”; I think her book is for all women but mostly those who reach a time in their lives where we feel a strong need to possibly reinvent while maintaining the integrity of who we are and have been. I kept putting off the last chapter as I did not want this beautiful story to end. Especially as a true lover of all things Tuscan and Italian, this book sang to me on every page.

Since I enjoyed Under the Tuscan Sun, I had high expectations for this book.It was awful! The author went overboard on tedious, over the top descriptions. Seriously - who needs a half a page to describe a charcuterie platter?The overall tone of the book is pretentious and snobby. I thought about returning it, but the cost of returning a book to Amazon was excessive.I'll donate it to charity!

I have always enjoyed Frances Mayes books and this was no exception, but I think her true métier is writing memoirs and travelogues instead of novels. It also lacked solid editing. For example, there's no build up to wanting to live in Italy. One minute the three women are saying "Meh" to the retirement community and the next thing you know they're on their way to Tuscany. I also noticed that she recycled incidents and descriptions from previous books. A writer of her imagination doesn't need to do that and a good editor wouldn't have allowed it. I am also puzzled by the Margaret storyline versus the Three Southern Women. Each were intriguing in their own way, but as one reviewer pointed out, it was like reading two separate books.There were plenty of "must be nice" aspects - no money problems, no health issues, plenty of attractive, available men, and lots of fun adventures with food, flowers, art, and sight seeing. Aside from the one with the cheating husband and drug addict daughter, the family situations aren't particularly complicated. Still, I enjoyed the escapism, the idea of taking risks, and embracing life's second chances. A good read from Frances Mayes, but not her best.

About the Author

David Holt Bio: David Holt found his life's journey in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. With a passion to become an old-time banjo player, David traveled to remote mountain communities like Kingdom Come, Kentucky and Sodom Laurel, North Carolina searching for the best traditional musicians. Holt found hundreds of old-time mountaineers with a wealth of folk music, stories and wisdom. There was banjoist Wade Mainer, ballad singer Dellie Norton, singing coal miner Nimrod Workman, and 122-year-old washboard player Susie Brunson. Holt learned to play not only the banjo but also many unusual instruments like the mouth bow, the bottleneck slide guitar and even the paper bag. For over three decades, David's passion for traditional music and culture has fueled a successful performing and recording career. He has earned four Grammy Awards and performed and recorded with many of his mentors including Doc Watson, Grandpa Jones, Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, Roy Acuff and Chet Atkins. The other, more negative, reviewer is a little harsh but I can see his point. This isn't a book that you become enamored with necessarily the minute you pick it up. It seems to be a bit more basic, less comprehensive or "professional" than something you might want for the genre. STILL...if you read through it's first half and haven't found yourself engaged or smiling regularly - then I think there might be something wrong with you.Major folk tale, legends, or "weird short stories" fans may really be able to get something out of it. That's why I bought it - because I like the much shorter, more unpredictable stories out there of all kinds. They're all just so fun and easy to read. Whether it's Brothers Grimm or old American scary stories - these kinds of legends and fairy tales (well-known or not) - always seem to rise above with a certain charm.That being said, I'll admit to only liking about half of the "tales" included within this title. Some seem pointless. However, some of the ones I did like are real gems that I'd be happy to re-read down the line. I would try this book because, at the end of the day, the authors have done a neat job of laying out these pieces while including some good ones that you might not be able to find in-print anywhere else.

If you're considering this book, pick it up and read a section of it (some are under a paragraph long). If you think its stupid, you'll think the whole book is stupid. If you like one section, you'll like the book. Its cheesy. It tells nothing about where these urban legends started. Its a loose collection of urban legends. It made me smile a few times but it never made me laugh. Its good to have to sit next to your toilet for reading to pass time. My kid didn't like it really. She came to me a few times because she didn't understand what was so funny about a story. And I couldn't find it. Kind of a waste of time. I give it a two because i think if you can't get your kid to read anything else, this might be the kind of reading he or she would want to do. I picked it up for us thinking it would be funny and it wasn't really funny at all.
