Having dealt with meth addicts in my work, I was really interested to read a book from a junkie's perspective. Mr. Salant's story is unusual, in my experience, in that he was shooting heroin before every going to meth. As a result, he almost immediately begins intraveneous meth use, which is a pretty rare -- and serious -- starting point.However, his descent into the meth world, the life driven by the single-minded quest for the next hit, the deceit, the overwhelming paranoia, and the moral and physical decay are presented vividly. You keep thinking, why would anyone want to even start down this path?A disturbing part of this story is the parents' enabling role in their son's ongoing addiction, especially in light of their older son's similar descent into the drug world. Their naivete and gullibility jarred me in light of their educated, middle class upbringing. Mr. Salant consistently cons them out of money and sympathy. But I wonder if as a parent I would be able to engage in the "tough love" he appears to have needed.The primary reason that I gave this book 4 stars, and not 5, is the author's failure to discuss fully the difficulty of getting and remaining sober, when he eventually chooses to do so. In my observations, meth addiction is one of the most difficult to overcome, particularly on a long-term basis due to the permanent damage which it wreaks on one's brain. I would have liked the book to flesh out that ongoing process, so that readers don't come away with an unrealistic understanding of the complexity of getting and staying "straight."Nevertheless, this is an interesting and vivid work of the lives and thought processes of meth additcts.

Salant's book is by far the best memoir of drug addiction I've ever read.It's precisely the relative absence of shock-for-shock's sake that made this book such a satisfying read. As described by Salant, a drug addict's world isn't exciting; it's just sordid (which Salant acknlowedges in recounting some of the gross and/or unsavory things he did while addicted. Those of us who like to read about unsavory things done by other people - and I'm one of them - do get their money's worth in this memoir). But it's his writing that struck me as singular.Told by a less talented writer, this story could have been ho-hum. But Salant writes with great clarity and economy, and seems objective as he can be in a book about himself. He does talk about writing poetry in the book, though sometimes he lied about that so his parents would send him money, so I'm not sure how much poetry he actually wrote!But as for his prose, Salant writes as if he's been writing forever - he's that good. He's an extremely talented young writer, and thanks to that, this book wasn't the cobbled-together addiction exploitation book it very easily could have been.Another reviewer said he (or she) would have liked more about his recovery. I think that might have been too much; I think Salant was right in leaving off where he did. And for an addict or alcoholic, there is always the chance of relapse; it's risky talking about your "recovery" when you're still in your early 20s. That's just my view, of course.But this one's absolutely well worth reading.

The main character Jim (the author James Salant) keeps you on the edge of your seat.James doesnt waste your time trying to give you statistics on drugs, drug use or even how meth is produced.This is his story of addiction, from beginning to end. Its not a pretty journey through the countryside, but rather a long walk down a dirty, dangerous back alley.Meth use is a disgusting, but growing problem in the U.S. This book gives you one mans glimpse of what it was like being hooked on it!!!

This book is a gut wrenching and real account of how meth and heroin takes over a life and grinds it into the pavement. If you know anyone who has ever been addicted to drugs you will relate to this story, how the drugs take over your body, mind and soul and how that affects the people around you and that love you. The stealing, the crime, the sex, the crazy and obsessive behavior. It is all here. If you don't know anyone addicted to drugs, once you read this book you will have a better understanding of why they act the way they do. Understanding is half the battle.

James Salant tells a frightening, but oh so truthful story of his experiences with meth and what it did / does to him and his family. The nightmare caused by this drug is unbelievable and what he writes about in his story is pretty much the normal run for users and their families. Everyone gets hurt and I speak from personal experience from the family side and watching 2 family members slide down into hell because of this drug. Mr. Salant tells it like it is and the story is excellent reading.

Every 13 year old should read this book. If they did, we wouldn’t have a drug problem in this country.

I am a detox nurse so I enjoy books of this nature. Such a good read, could not put it down. The book was an easy read, not too gruesome. The relationships and situations presented make you really personify the author-- love him, hate him, want to scream at him. I recommend this book not only to colleagues but friends and family. The country needs to see addiction as a disease, this book does that as well as showing that an addict will only maintain sobriety once he or she wants it.

About the Author

Laurie Keller is the acclaimed author-illustrator of Do Unto Otters, Arnie, the Doughnut, and The Scrambled States of America, among numerous others. She grew up in Muskegon, Michigan, and always loved to draw, paint and write stories. She earned a B.F.A. at Kendall College of Art and Design, then worked at Hallmark as a greeting card illustrator for seven-and-a-half years, until one night she got an idea for a children's book. She quit her job, moved to New York City, and soon had published her first book. With so many young patients at our dental office, we decided to increase our dental library of children's books. After ordering ten or more stories, this was by far our absolute favorite for children AND parents. We're always looking for a way to teach parents to teach their kids about the importance of good oral health. This is perfect! There is so much information in this book about the structure of teeth, the jobs of each tooth, and why caring for teeth is essential. Parents and children learn that primary teeth (baby teeth) play a crucial role in speech development and holding a place for permanent teeth. While kids and parents are learning accurate information, they'll find that the humor in the book is fantastic as well. This is a dentist-approved book! We just love it and have shared the title with many others.

Laurie Keller's books provide enjoyment to the very young on up. My 10 year old daughter love this books and still laughs at the more adult jokes hidden in the small print. She also loves the anatomical information provided. This is a great book for a quick read before bedtime.

Bought as a gift for my 6 year old nephew but I read it with my 6 year old daughter before we gave it to him. It was super funny and I had to explain some of the situations as she didn't pick up on them all. I bought it with the other Laurie Keller books and the DVD.

My 5yr loves the book! Now she knows about her teeth. Although she still has all her baby teeth but now she knows her front teeth are called incisors. I have to read it twice every time and oh boy it's quite a long book but funny. I would recommend this book.

My tooth and dentist obsessed 4 year old loves this! They explain mouths, teeth, and the dentist in such fun ways!

My daughter loves it! As a dental clinician, I see this book in most dental offices. It's filled with good dental info but with an artistic humor.

I decided to start playing the flute again after 17 years of leaving it in a box. I've forgotten a lot of what I knew and don't have time for private lessons. This book has been an excellent refresher for me as I teach myself to play again.

This is a good book to acquaint yourself with the flute, learn the notes and how to blow into the flute. It also instructs you how to properly hold your instrument and play some simple songs. I'm retired and decided to try to learn an instrument later in life and always loved the flute. Of course I would choose an instrument that is rather difficult. I wanted to learn some basics before I took some lessons, saving some money. This does the trick.

After obtaining a 50s era flute at a silent auction and having it reconditioned, I looked for a flute method that I could use to teach myself to play. The Rubank Method popped up and I was immediately flooded with memories from my childhood in the 60s when my music teacher used this method to teach me the clarinet. I recalled it as an effective (and fun) method with some pretty interesting drills. I immediately ordered all the flute books in the series from beginner to advanced vol. 2. I had previously ordered two other flute method books and was disappointed...too much history and music theory and no logical sequential approach to learning. I can't begin to convey how excited I am to have found this method...even the cover is exactly the same...and the price can't be beat. This series is a "must" for any serious student of the flute.

After taking about 20+ years off playing the flute I had forgotten all of the fingerings, notes, and how to read the music. This has been a great refresher and works you through each set of notes with plenty of practice snips to reinforce the skills being taught in each lesson. I would recommend this for all ages (I remember learning from these books when I was in elementary/middle school). As a parent I would assist my child in working through the books if you are doing them from home; at least until they get the hang of how to use them.Great product (for the entire series of books).

This is the classic method book from (at least) 40 years ago or more. I used it when I was in beginning band, and I am now using it to teach my own flute students. The lessons are clear and concise, and build at a logical pace.No frilly stuff. Just good, down-to-earth music theory and practical instruction.

I have only looked at this book, I have several wind instruments I am practicing and learning to play.The content looks well structured, as if made for school students to learn from. It seems easy enough to read and understand and I feel it will be a great asset in my quest to play the flute. Thanks!

Classic. One of the best. Used the Rubank method for piano in the early 80s. It works.

I like this book when tutoring students on a new instrument, but who are familiar with music. It works well to learn fingerings and reacquaint with rhythms. I do not recommend it for any musician who is totally unfamiliar with music reading and to someone who is younger than 12. It advances too quickly as far as I'm concerned when it comes to needing complete music learning.
