This is by far the shortest book I own and yet also the densest. It is so brilliantly composed that hardly ever did a single word or phrase seem unnecessary. I like to collect my favorite passages from the books I read and soon found myself transcribing the entire work. This may only represent a tiny portion of the Buddhist canon, but you will find yourself wondering why any more writings are even necessary if you are able to comprehend the depth and scope of this brief text.Juan Mascaro quickly became a translator I had to read more from and I made sure to get his renditions of The Upanishads and The Bhagavad Gita as well as his rare personal collection of meditative aphorisms The Creation of Faith. What makes Mascaro so valuable as a representative of these spiritual texts is that he had not only an exceptional talent for translating and capturing the essence and flow of ancient works, but he was very much on a spiritual quest of his own. You can feel how respectful and careful he was in balancing the archaic rhythm and tone of the texts and the need to make them equally beautiful and sensible in a foreign language and for modern readers.

I've read the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Dhammapada, and I'm working on the Bodhicaryavatara. The Dhammapada is, by far, my favorite. I'll let others debate the value of Juan Mascaro's translation, as I'm no authority on translations, nor have I read the scholarly literature on the subject -- all what I've seen is people debating it here on Amazon, and I don't know those people from Adam. Let me just say that I really enjoy the Penguin classics edition, and his introduction to the volume is quite good.

I fully disagree with the bad reviews about Mascaro's translation of the Dhammapada, the ones that complain it does not flow or is inaccurate. I have read several versions, and this one is the best. Poetic, elegant, capturing the essence and spirit of the original meaning. It's a translator's job to do exactly that, and not be a mere transcriptionist. I first had this version in 2005, and if it tells you anything now I re-ordered in 2017 it after finding lesser other versions. This is the one I don't want to be without.

I'm something of a christian theologian and I've long felt the need to learn a bit about buddhism. Juan's introduction is exactly what I wanted to find and has been most helpful to me in understanding what it is that so many people find in this discipline. The differences between my christianity and a buddhist's belief it seems to me are simply different ways of expressing very similar world views - using different explanatory models to represent as best we can the underlying reality of existence.I was delighted to find, actually to confirm, the existence of this common ground between us. I'd go further and say that as I read this book I felt a very familiar sense of inner elation and discovery similar to what I get when reading parts of the bible. My early impression is that the effect with the Dhammapada if anything seems to be concentrated in far fewer words, though that may just be due to long familiarity with the christians' bible. I remember feeling the same sense of excitement when first reading the books of the old and new testaments.I am gratified to have become slightly less ignorant in this subject and would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in theology and who has not yet bothered to read anything about buddhist beliefs.

I agree with one of the other reviewers who said that this translation is 'deeply disappointing'. The translation has no flow, it's almost as if it was auto-translated using some software! the verses are dry and sometimes make almost no sense...I am really disappointed! I am donating this book to any used bookstore who will take it!Moving on, I purchased Gil Fronsdal's translation and it is beautifully written. I would highly recommend Fronsdal's version.

I gave this particular copy as a gift to my cousin, that she may use it to guide her grandchildren. This is Juan Mascaro's translation of The Dhammapada; it's my favorite. I have read it many times (as one ought). There is a rock-hard pragmatism in these teachings. Read the first chapter, "Contrary Ways", and you will keep The Dhammapada near you for the rest of your life. - I promise that!

Review

“The book goes far beyond recounting Franz’s personal crisis. It describes the much larger crisis that faces Jehovah’s Witnesses worldwide.” — Christianity Today“A candid and uniquely informative view of the authority structure and inner workings of the religious organization known as Jehovah’s Witnesses.“... the book is a poignant personal document, reaffirming the value of ‘freedom of conscience,’ and inviting renewed attention to the classic problem of how this value is to be kept alive in the face of the perennial resurgence of bureaucratic and authoritarian structures.”— Dr. Joseph F. Zygmunt, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, University of Connecticut“In past years, much literature (about Jehovah’s Witnesses) of varying quality has been published ... with certain exceptions, it has been poor when judged from critical scholarly criteria ... A well-documented work on the controversial movement has finally become available to the Witnesses and the public in general ... No serious scholar or reader, therefore, can now ignore the information presented by Raymond Franz.“A common fault with authors who feel they have to disclose errors—real or imagined—within a movement they later have been forced to break with, are feelings of hatred and bitterness. You will find little of this in Crisis of Conscience. To the contrary, the calm, objective tone awakens respect and admiration.”— Dr. Ingemar Linden, Th.D., Dagen, Stockholm, Sweden

About the Author

Raymond Franz, formerly a Governing Body member of Jehovah's Witnesses, was part of the third-generation in his family to join the Watch Tower Society, serving in various countries at nearly every level of the organizational structure. Graduating from Gilead missionary school of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1944, Franz served in Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands, and the Dominican Republic until he was reassigned to Brooklyn headquarters in 1965. Thereafter as part of the headquarters staff, he worked in the writing department. By 1971 he was invited to become a Governing Body member, serving as such until resigning in 1980. Franz shares an account that reveals the inner workings and the decision-making processes of the Governing Body. The final nine of his sixty years as one of Jehovah's Witnesses were spent on this central executive council. Those years led to his crisis of conscience, which is the theme of this book.

I would love to give this book 5 stars but just because it was so long, I had to give it 4. Ray Franz was a kind, mild mannered man who loved God, the bible and doing what was right. He was treated so poorly and unfairly during his exit of the Governing Body. The way JW's have portrayed him is so inaccurate and ludicrous. He tried to leave The Governing Body quietly, moving to another state but they hounded him and harassed him and inevitably, disfellowshiped him as they do anyone who does not play by their rules. JW's refer to apostates as "mentally diseased" because they choose to think differently and leave the organization. The amount of times the organization has changed their stance on things such as Blood, Armageddon, the generation that will "by no means will pass away" and how they discontinue publications to fit their changing views should give pause to their members. The only reason they discourage it's members from reading apostate literature or websites is because they know you'll find out the REAL truth. Glad I read this book. It's heartbreaking what Mr. Franz went through, but he was a courageous man for exposing the REAL truth about "the truth."

I wish someone would re-publish this incredible book, along with the second volume. For anyone who has either experienced the absolute mind control, trauma and abuse of the cult called "Jehovah's Witnesses", or is currently associating with this cult (or even thinking about associating with it) PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. The Bible says "the Truth will set you free", and that absolute statement applies to how the "TRUTH" given in this book will "set you free" from the bondage of guilt and fear so effectively inculcated into the minds and hearts of innocent victims by the evil, demonic machinations of this cult group. Sadly, most of the victims will never seize the chance to be "rescued", because the JW society effectively FORBIDS the READING of ANY PUBLICATION that originates outside of the cult organization's own "in house" publishings.

This is a biographical book by Raymond Franz, a former member of the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses, written in 1983, three years after his expulsion from the Jehovah's Witnesses religion. The book is a major study and exposé of the internal workings of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society during the 1960s and 1970s. The book was updated and revised four times, with the final revisions made in 2004. "They demonstrate the extremes to which 'loyalty to an organization' can lead, how it is that basically kind, well-intentioned persons can be led to make decisions and take actions that are both unkind and unjust, even cruel." Also addressed is the organization's "concern to maintain a mindset of date related urgency among members." His statements are backed by copies of Watchtower letters from within the organization, as well as, published articles. This book will tell you more about the history of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (aka Jehovah's Witnesses) than any "rank and file" member.Because of the Watchtower organization's control and demand for loyalty of it's members, most Jehovah's Witnesses will refuse to read this book since they are forbidden from examining any information conflicting or criticizing the Watchtower beliefs and teachings.I would also like to recommend "Freedom of Mind- helping loved ones leave controlling people, cults, and beliefs" by Steve Hassan.

If you are an "ex-jw" you MUST read this. This is NOT APOSTATE. It is written by a member of the GOVERNING BODY telling the SECRETS of Bethel and the things they don't want us to know.I was raised in "the truth" and in my teenage years began questioning certain scriptures and meanings. The answers that were provided did not make sense to me. I decided to tell my mom at the age of 15 that I did not wish to attend meetings anymore. I didn't see the point, my questions were dismissed and things I had read in other versions of the bible made our bible sound different. The scriptures meant different things. Why would they change it? And why couldn't they just explain to me "the truth"??At the age of 16, I left "The Truth". I was never baptized. My mother told me that if I "turned my back on God" he would NEVER be there for me. If I left him, he would leave me.Does that sound like the all-forgiving, loving God we know?? NO!He has been there for me now more than ever before, my faith has been strengthened upon reading this book. Now knowing I wasn't going crazy or mearly "making things up in my head" that these scriptures meanings didn't seem right to me. Or the rules in that case.Disfellowshipping! You do not talk to those who have made a mistake and therefore may "stumble" you.Would JESUS turn his back on the needy?? The imperfect lost ones who admit to their mistake and admit they need him the most?!!This is the most disgusting thing to me. A people who call themselves so loving and accepting, yet turn their backs on their own BLOOD because "were told to do so"? Says who?? The governing body. WRONG WAY TO LIVE.If you have any regrets from leaving " The Truth" or feel you should still be going to meetings because of your family and friends looking down upon you. I cannot stress enough to READ THIS BOOK.You will have a weight lifted off your shoulders.

Review

“A noted authority on all things Texas, Graham turns his attention to film with this authoritative tale of 'Big Texas Oil' and the epic movie Giant . . . A delightful work of film/cultural history for movie fans.” ―Kirkus Reviews "Don Graham digs into Giant like a wildcatter drilling for oil...He provides colorful tales with minimal Texas exaggeration and a plethora of facts and anecdotes...a book that will satisfy fans of the film."―Philadelphia Enquirer"One of the joys of reading Graham is his ability to tell a complete tale, a scene from life, and cap it with a laconic statement of a theme.”―Texas Observer “A lively study of a book and movie that helped define the image of Texas in the last century.”―Dallas News“A compelling, behind-the-camera look at one of the 1950s’ most unusual―and successful mainstream Hollywood productions…so thorough it should have come with its own stage directions.”―Houston Chronicle"An entertaining case study...Graham makes the most of the toil and trouble behind Giant, bringing to life an era of filmmaking that's gone with the West Texas wind.” –Associated Press“Splendid…A sharp, insightful look at a legendary film.”―Booklist (starred review)“A solid historical context…opening the pages of this book is like breaking into a time capsule.”―Washington Post“Lively . . . deeply researched and efficiently paced.” ―Publishers Weekly“Don Graham is a masterful storyteller . . . Just as Giant the movie was the talk of the town back in 1956, I know Don’s lively narrative will be the talk of the town today. He captures West Texas and the big screen stars perfectly.” ―Mrs. Laura Bush“Don Graham, long a keen student of Texas literature, has given us a brilliant study of a classic American film.” ―Larry McMurtry, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Last Kind Words Saloon“Don Graham goes far behind the scenes to deftly capture the fragile egos and sexual misadventures of the legendary cast, the extraordinary determination of Stevens, and the reaction of Texans who warily embraced a cinematic self-portrait they found both troubling and irresistible.” ―Glenn Frankel, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of The Searchers and High Noon“Graham breathes new life into the gripping story behind one of mid-century America’s great epics, retold with invaluable insight drawn from the wells of cultural history, Hollywood dish and Texan lore.” ―Noah Isenberg, Los Angeles Times bestselling author of We’ll Always Have Casablanca“Some films are so vital they become part of American history. Giant is one of them. Don Graham shows us how a volatile mix of some of Hollywood’s biggest, most troubled, personalities― Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, the doomed James Dean ― came together under the brilliant direction of George Stevens to create an epic that rivals Texas in size, scope, and sheer impact. With insight and wit, Graham gives us a highly entertaining saga of how movies are made and why they become iconic.” ―Nancy Schoenberger, author of the critically acclaimed Dangerous Muse: The Life of Lady Caroline Blackwood and the upcoming Wayne and Ford: The Films, the Friendship, and the Forging of an American Hero“Giant is a page-turning tale of giant talents and egos toiling in a remote Texas location with the legendary director George Stevens to create a classic in American film. Especially Dean is poignantly portrayed as a tortured young man whose career and life flamed out much too soon. Essential reading for every fan of the silver screen.” ―Tom Clavin, New York Times bestselling author of Dodge City“You’ve seen the movie, of course? If not, you’ll rush to get the Blu-ray when you’re a few pages into Don Graham’s riveting book that tells the story of 'Giant' from start to finish. That story involves half of Hollywood, and not only the stars ― Elizabeth Taylor, RockHudson, James Dean ― but those other superstars considered for the roles: Audrey Hepburn, William Holden, Grace Kelly, Clark Gable, and many others. This brilliant chronicle will grab you like a thriller.” ―Sam Staggs, author of All About All About Eve

I admire this book for the story it tells and the way it tells it. Don Graham’s well-documented account of the making of “Giant,” a 1956 movie based on popular novelist Edna Ferber’s scathing attack on Texas arrogance and racism, reads like popular fiction with characters drawn straight from central casting—from a crusty genius of a director to actors who defined Hollywood celebrity in the post-war era: Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, and James Dean. The book is timely too: I recently watched “Giant” with a young Texan who had neither heard of the movie nor recognized any members of its cast. Yet the film was a revelation to him, grand in scale, memorable in its details, and prescient in its critique of racism and sexism. Graham’s book is similarly evocative —underscoring how remarkable director George Stevens’ achievement was. The author gives due attention, of course, to Hudson, Taylor, and especially Dean, but he doesn’t ignore the other people who contributed to the film or landscapes they worked in, especially Marfa, Texas—a stark and gritty town that comes to life in this fine and highly readable book.

When director George Stevens began casting for Giant, it was clear it was going to be a big movie. Everybody who was anybody wanted to be in the film, which was based on Edna Ferber's blockbuster novel.Among those considered for the role of Bick were Robert Mitchum, William Holden and Stewart Granger. Those mentioned as possibilities for the role of Leslie included Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Patricia O'Neal and Ann Baxter. Actors considered for the role of Jett included Alan Ladd, Gene Kelly and Robert Mitchum. In the end, the roles went to Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean. Hudson, not known as a particularly good actor, would give the best performance of his career. Taylor was an established superstar and Dean was a mercurial young actor. At first, Dean held both Hudson and Taylor with contempt, but he softened toward Taylor. Dean and Hudson never got along. Although Hudson was homosexual and Dean was probably bisexual, they both were, in a sense, pursuing Taylor.Dean is the most enigmatic of the trio. He and George Stevens clashed from the very beginning.Stevens, who tolerated Dean, described him as "equal parts brilliant and a royal pain in the ass."Dean, hungry for publicity and attention, tried to steal the film from Hudson, Taylor and Stevens. Although his role was only a supporting role (he's on screen about a third of the movie), he acted like the movie was all about his character, Jett Rink. He was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category. He didn't win. But, he probably would have won an Academy Award if he had been nominated in the Best Action in a Supporting Role category.Author Don Graham provides plenty of background on Stevens, Taylor, Hudson and Dean. I have read a couple books on James Dean and I learned things about Dean from Giant that I didn't know.Dean was described as a "nervous bundle of volatile polarities, brash bad-boy behavior, open aggression, little boy wounds and exposed nerve endings."Someone said Dean acted "like a gifted angel and behaved like a juvenile delinquent."Graham also provides readers with plenty of interesting, behind-the-scenes stories about the making of Giant.Dean died before the movie was finished, but director George Stevens insisted upon not missing a day of filming. This particularly upset Elizabeth Taylor, who had grown fond of Dean.If you have any interest in any of the actors involved or the movie Giant, this is a must read.

I moved to Texas fifteen years and saw the movie for the first time. Intrigued, I read Edna Ferber's book. Still fascinated, I made it out to Marfa and stayed at the Paisano Hotel (with "Giant" playing on a loop in the lobby). Now I have the back story of all those involved— the director, the Hollywood studio, the book's author, the players (big and small). This tale could probably only be told sixty years on as much has been learned about everyone with the passing of time. George Stevens, Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor are well-profiled, but Don Graham does give James Dean the lion's share of attention. Seeing that Dean was at a pivotal point in his career, there is much to speculate based on his behavior and his performance.

I have been a Deaniac since 1955 when he was killed in the car wreck. I have read every word ever written about him, seen all his films more than once and also seen everything available from his t.v. appearances. I also visited his grave in the early 60's. This book is the icing on the very old cake I've been baking. It was written just in time, for we Dean fans are dying quickly now. He would have been 87 this year so his fans are not that young anymore. If you are interested in James Dean I absolutely recommend this well written, well researched book. I asked a Millennial who Humphrey Bogart was and she was totally blank. I asked her who James Dean was and she knew. I rest my case. Go get the book.

To the point, I thought the book was sort of padded with far too much material devoted to the lives of certain actors in the movie. If the book was cut in maybe a half, and more attention given to the actual movie and its production, I would be more positive about the contents. I also add, some details were presented which were inaccurate or best said, wrong or clearly incorrect. I am a stickler for statements that are very clearly facts being accurate and real and true. Early in the book I read some details that were incorrect and as usual for me, I started to question other parts as well. I understand some things are a matter of opinion or are of gossip type nature. However, facts about certain towns are facts easily checked, known, and thus presented. The author and/or editors made mistakes there and for me, do not enhance the book as based on something I think to be true.

Giant is one of my favorite movies. My mother adored Giant and I came to appreciate the masterful filmaking and acting in this classic as she and I watched the film together many times over the years. I really looked forward to reading the story behind the scenes of the great film. This book began to tell that story, but early on it derailed into what is essentially a biography of James Dean. If you're looking to truly learn about the making of Giant you'll be disappointed. If James Dean's life, loves, and psychology interest you then this is the book for you.
