Bellevue: Three Centuries of Medicine and Mayhem at America's Most Storied Hospital

Review

“Any exciting book about the history of Bellevue—which this one surely is—is destined to be as much about the history of disease, medicine and New York City as about the hospital itself. Mr. Oshinsky’s chapters about the early days of medicine are especially, distractingly interesting—so much so that they’ll inspire you to read them aloud to anyone who’ll listen . . . Mr. Oshinsky, who won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for history for Polio: An American Story, has a lovely flair for detail.” —Jennifer Senior, The New York Times“Brilliant and deliciously readable . . . The story of Bellevue, Oshinsky convincingly demonstrates, is the story of modern medicine, of New York City, and of America itself.”—Boston Globe“Deeply engrossing . . . Oshinsky has wrestled an institutional history of significant complexity into a compelling tale . . . [He] is a master of finding and relating memorable anecdotes to embody the history. The result is a serious story studded with juicy and occasionally blood-curdling bits from the past.”—Chicago Tribune“No other hospital is as embedded in our culture as Bellevue. David Oshinsky’s biography of this grand dame of America’s public hospitals is a page-turner . . . Oshinsky has captured the spirit, the resilience that is Bellevue, a quality that rubs off on the legions who have trained there. A wonderful read!” —Abraham Verghese, author of Cutting for Stone“Compelling . . . In this rich history, we bear witness to a remarkable transformation as Bellevue evolves from bare-bones almshouse appendage in the 1700s to world-class academic medical center today . . . Oshinsky simply has a wealth of great material, and it’s a joy to traverse it with him.” —USA Today“You’ll walk away in awe of this tenacious institution—and marvel at the way Oshinsky also fits a comprehensive but succinct history of modern medicine itself into the same book.” —Entertainment Weekly

Oshinsky's writing is clear, cohesive and compassionate. I loved this book. My only connection to the subject matter was living in New York for 15 years (25 years ago) and never paying attention to the hospital. If you have any interest at all in the history of NYC, hospitals, medicine, social programs, government corruption, advancements in medical research, disease control or decades of devoted service, read this book. Get engrossed, get enlightened, get educated. You'll also get entertained.

I'd always associated Bellevue with an insane asylum, but apparently I got that idea from movies and stand-up comedians. Today, only 1/3 of Bellevue patients receive psychiatric treatment, and those with severe cases are sent elsewhere.Bellevue began as a mansion that was converted to an almshouse and more famously as the go-to hospital for yellow fever patients. Later it became the haven for any patient who couldn't afford medical care, and it still is.Bellevue should also receive credit for many medical innovations, including the horse and buggy ambulance, forensic medicine and pathology. They took the tough cases. New York City was the center of the AIDS epidemic, and Bellevue took most of them before there was any kind of treatment. They were ready for Ebola victims before they even got one; when they did, he was a doctor, and they saved his life. Bellevue was there when Sandy struck, and a retaining wall collapsed, flooding its basement, where gasoline was stored to fuel its back-up generators on the thirteenth floor. Nurses, orderlies and doctors hauled gasoline up the stairs to keep the generators operating until the hospital could be evacuated. All thirty-seven elevators were down. Once more doctors, nurses, police men, firemen and the national guard spent a day and a night removing 700 patients to safety. Nobody died.So . . . where does the insane asylum myth come from? That would be from Nellie Bly who wrote a series on Bellevue for Joseph Pulitzer's WORLD. She later wrote a book about her experience, TEN DAYS IN A MAD HOUSE, most of which occurred on Blackwell's Island where the serious cases were sent. She did see some seedy looking characters at Bellevue, but that's because they almost never turn anyone away.Bellevue has also gotten some bad press at times. A doctor was murdered there. She was killed by a man who'd been living in a janitor's closet for several days. Another man had been living in the basement for two weeks. Yes, Bellevue was a haven for the homeless at times. It was the only place they could go. But security was seriously stepped up after the murder.Bellevue has also been the go-to place for medical students to get practical experience. For years they had a mutual relationship with Colgate, Columbia, and NYU medical schools. There was almost no disease they wouldn't be exposed to at Bellevue, and the hospital never went begging for applicants. As the Sandy episode shows, these people are heroes, and the American public doesn't even know it. New York City government is also heroic. Through the years, they've spent millions keeping the hospital for the destitute open. Those governments include republican, democratic, even Tammany Hall, but they all agreed that Bellevue was a necessity, a shining beacon signifying that we have a responsibility to treat the less fortunate.

One of few books I didn't buy on Amazon, I wanted to write about it because it is such a great read. Tons of fascinating backstory here. Bellevue has a unique identity among hospitals and this book explains why. You will gain insight into the history of New York City, and effects of the various waves of immigration upon the growth of NC. Also, the author offers concise, riveting descriptions of the development of public health. An account of why Bellevue's devotion to indigent patients gave its staff the expertise to overcome its perpetual lack of funding. This book is a delight to read, and I will now turn to the author's earlier book, Polio.

Much more than a history of Bellevue....a fascinating chronicle of medical history, immigration history, political history....I loved this book. Great interview on NPR prompted me to buy it.

This was a very interesting account of the history of medicine and how it evolved over the years. The only reason why I gave this book four stars instead of five is a feel the title is somewhat misleading. While some of this book involves details of the day-to-day activities at Bellevue, those who pick up this book looking for details of the goings-on at Bellevue and only at Bellevue, might be disappointed as there is a lot of focus on other organizations, diseases, New York City, etc., that don't necessarily involve Bellevue. Some may also choose to read this book because the hospital is known for its mental healthcare, but this book does not have a large focus on this aspect. Nonetheless, this is a great read, especially for the lay person who does not have a background in medicine, but is interested in its history. Recommended.

My grandmother worked at Bellevue in the early 1900s and for a variety of reasons I have been back and forth for some seventy years. In the mid 50s it resembles a classic 19th Century insane asylum with poorly kept facilities. Today it is exemplary. It is one of the classic public hospitals and remains that way, serving a broad spectrum of patients. The book is wonderfully written in that it gives both a history of Bellevue as well as the development of the other hospitals in New York. Each had their historical beginnings in a religious group from Protestant to Catholic to Jewish. But it was Bellevue which managed to have its doors open to all.The author presents this up and down history in an exceptionally readable manner and places it in context with the other institutions in New York. This is definitely a worthwhile read for those interested in New York as well as the development of health care.

I gave this book's author Robert five stars for such a helpful and informative type of book to help us readers to reevaluate our receptions of the real Bible God that not all pastors will really share with their congregation. It will really open one's eyes to the real truth. I liked it because it seemed he was really doing his best to share our real Father in Heaven that some pastors do not bother wanting to share with Hos people as he may be afraid of rocking their and Hos boat sort of speaking,ok? I recommend this book to those who wish to know the real truth and to be set free. Because as Jesus told us the Truth will set you free! This is not for those who cannot read heavy reading or not wanting to really learn more about our Bible Jesus and God or for the very new readers out there! I received thos bookfree and in exchange I am doing the review on this book"Who's Your Father? Great work , Robert! Keep it up! By Angela L.

Rarely do I believe new authors. I did not know this guy. But what a read! I am a bit cranial type and wow...I bowed down in Worship as I read this book. Every argument (except some Jeremiah "never entered my mind") is treated with respect and then shred into pieces to see the glory of God behind the silly open theists and serious heady types. I was stunned to see this God this Almighty God is my Father. I sang a hymn with joy after reading this book. Winner...I am still reading the final part of the book....The undercurrent of Father/Sovereign creator seems to warm this book. It took me about 3 months to read this book.

This book is a straight-forward defence of the sovereignty of God in response to recent claims that seek to promote God's love at the expense of his sovereignty and holiness. It is not a full discussion of the various issues and views in the debate, so should be read in conjunction with other material.I'm happy to protect the sovereignty of God in the face of human libertarian claims, so there is much in this book that I appreciate. However, as I read it I got the feeling there is something about this book that is not quite right - it presents a too one-sided picture of God's character.I think that when considering the apparent contradiction between God's grace and his justice, Bernecker has come down firmly on the side of seeing God's sovereign justice as primary and as ultimately trumping his mercy. This may when well be in response to the tendency in contemporary theology to see God's love, grace and mercy as primary and over-ruling his justice. Nevertheless, Bernecker presents such a one-sided position that he repeats the error he sees in others, merely in the opposite direction. Where others emphasise God's love and mercy to the point that God becomes completely benevolent towards all people, Bernecker emphasises God's sovereignty to the point that God becomes indifferent to the human predicament.Bernecker consistently makes the point that God acts for his own pleasure and that his purposes never fail to be accomplished. Unfortunately, Bernecker never addresses the issues that naturally arise in a person's mind about how can God choose to save some and not others. This leads to the impression that God is capricious and arbitrary about the way he deals with people - which seems to us to be unjust and uncaring of people. Now, I do not think that Bernecker believes in an unjust and uncaring God, but the end result is that this book does not provide enough material to be a reliable overview of the issues with a nuanced response.

One of the main things that has been lost in modern Christianity is the Main Thing - God Himself. The church invests millions of dollars in programming, high-tech equipment, buildings, and the like. However, what we need more than anything is to be drenched with the reality of the character, nature, and intimacy there is to be found in our relationship with God - especially as He has clearly revealed Himself in the Bible.Robert Bernecker has written a God-drenched book. He has written a book that tackles subjects as vast as the sovereignty of God, His providence, and our responsibility and will with reference to salvation and sanctification. The author tackles the "tough" doctrines of predestination, election, perseverance, and foreknowledge with theological precision, solid exegesis, and insight from 2,000 years of historical theology.Without getting bogged down in theological debate, Bernecker simply lets the chips fall where they may by giving a plethora of Scriptures on the deepest and profoundest issues of Theology Proper - the doctrine of God. However, not leaving the reader in the realm of the abstract but taking you into the intimate arms of our loving Father. If you want to understand the mind and heart of God and His will and purposes for humanity I highly recommend this book. It will give you a wonderful biblical theology of how God thinks and works in time and history - past, present, and future. In reading this book you will develop a higher view of God, and of His amazing plan for humanity - and for you - the reader. I urge you to take up this book and read about our Awesome God as revealed in the Scriptures and take the plunge in the waters of being drenched and soaked in God's glory. It's what you and I need more than anything else!
