The fact that this book was published three years ago and I'm the first to review it here on Amazon underscores the basic reason this book was published in the first place - we Westerners have been pathetically blind to and ignorant of non-Western intellectual traditions, particularly when it comes to academic philosophy where most professional philosophers would still laugh at the idea that the intellectual traditions of China, India, Japan, Tibet, or Korea have anything of value to offer us. With volumes like this available, and many others piling up, they couldn't be more wrong-headed, arrogant, and out of touch.This set of essays from both Asian and Western professional philosophers demonstrates that Chinese philosophy, yes, *traditional* Chinese philosophy, has plenty to say about contemporary philosophical issues from morality, to epistemology, to ethics and political philosophy, to metaphysics and ontology. The essays in this book set out to advance the discussion on a number of important contemporary positions in Western analytic philosophy using resources from Chinese philosophy which includes, but is not limited to, the Confucian, Daoist, and Buddhist traditions.As the editor Brian Bruya explains, the model for an essay written for this volume was based on the following: 1) that it addresses a topic recognizable to someone familiar with the various subfields of analytic philosophy, 2) that it clearly defines terms and positions and historic literature (Asian and Western) without engaging in unfounded speculation, 3) that it advances the current discussion in some way perhaps by supporting a minority view or contradicting a prominent position. The model also doesn’t require reference to Chinese sources but does ask for ideas that are at least inspired by Chinese tradition.There's no reason why a book can't focus solely on a single philosophical culture such as this one on China. But one must keep in mind that the challenge to Western thought comes equally from many streams of Indian/South Asian philosophy—various Brahmanical as well as Jain and Buddhist traditions. Buddhist thought of course spans several major world cultures—India, China, Tibet, Japan, Korea, and SE Asian cultures—that combined, have arguably been infiltrating Western thought more than indigenous Chinese philosophy. Important volumes in this regard are Jay Garfield’s recent "Engaging Buddhism: Why It Matters to Philosophy" and Brook Ziporyn’s "Being and Ambiguity: Philosophical Experiments with Tiantai Buddhism"… but there are dozens, if not hundreds, of others.With volumes like this and Bauer and Bell’s "The East Asian Challenge for Human Rights," Bell and Li’s "The East Asian Challenge for Democracy," and the “moon series”—Buddhist reflections on analytic philosophy by the writing group that calls themselves “the Cowherds” ("Moonpaths", "Moonshadows", "Pointing at the Moon", "The Moon Points Back"), there’s no longer any excuse for contemporary philosophers not to be conversant in the philosophical thought of other great world cultures.

As I reflect back on the many challenges I have faced supervising and managing teams in contact centers, there are a number of challenges that I couldn't quite put words to until I read 'The Three Signs of a Miserable Job: A Fable for Managers (and their employees)' by Patrick Lenconi (Jossey-Bass, 2007).'The Three Signs of a Miserable Job' is a leadership fable. The main character of the story is Brian Bailey, CEO of JMJ Fitness Machines. Brian loves his work at JMJ and his world suddenly changes when JMJ is sold. Now Brian must make a new life for himself in retirement. While Brian tries his best to enjoy retirement, there is something nagging at him. He wonders if the culture he created at JMJ was a fluke or something he could do again. Much to the surprise of his family and friends, he buys into a local pizza joint (Gene & Joe's) and takes on the role of assistant manager.Brian spent a lot of time thinking through what it was that created the culture at JMJ and narrowed it down to the following:*"People cannot be fulfilled in their work if they are not known." (anonymity)*"Everyone needs to know that their job matters, to someone. Anyone." (irrelevance)*"Employees need to be able to gauge their progress and level of contribution for themselves." (immeasurement)Much of the story chronicles the ups and downs as Brian puts his plan into action at Gene & Joe's. Once Brian has things moving along at a good pace at the restaurant, he excitedly finds himself thrust back into the C-suite as the new CEO of Desert Mountain Sports. Now Brian has the opportunity to take what he put into action at Gene & Joe's and apply it on a much larger scale. The story makes for a fast and enjoyable read, so I'll end there with the spoilers.I highly recommend this and every other leadership fable written by Patrick Lencioni. As leaders, we need to always be ready to learn and grow, so we can be better equipped to help our employees to find fulfillment, relevance, and success in the place that they spend nearly half of their waking hours Monday through Friday. 'The Three Signs of a Miserable Job' offers a reasonable framework to make that happen.

I purchased and read this book and liked it quite a lot. I think I unnerved people who would come in my office, because I always had the book displayed prominently on my desk - and people sometimes inferred that meant there was some "misery" factor associated with my job at the time (which was only partially correct).

Patrick Lencioni continues his series of excellent leadership/management books with The Three Signs of a Miserable Job: A Fable for Managers (And Their Employees) (J-B Lencioni Series). As usual, he uses a fable to make his point. He tells the story of Brian Bailey, a retired CEO who is trying to determine why people hate their jobs and how it can be fixed. Through the fable and the more direct final section, Lencioni identifies three forces that make a job miserable: anonymity, irrelevance, and immeasurement.When workers feel anonymous, especially to the boss, they tend not to care about their work. They just want to get through the day and go home. It is up to the manager to take a genuine interest in each person so that this anonymity is dispelled.When people feel irrelevant to the company, they often decide that their work doesn't matter. While they may be key to the success of the organization, they may not know that. Someone needs to tell then the role they play and how their work helps others.While immeasurement may be a word that Lencioni has created, it is a simple concept. Workers need to be able to measure success. They need to know that they have fulfilled their goal. We have to be careful to measure things that we can control, but we all need some way of knowing that we have succeeded.Lencioni is clear that these are simple concepts, but his insights are excellent. As usual, Lencioni takes very simple things and shows that any manager can master them with some effort. This is one more really helpful tool in leading people.

The details about the book online say all that you really need to know. There is not much more depth other than the preview pages and end flaps. The only thing that kept me reading was the colorful details of the characters in the storyline. I had expected more. I got so much out of his other books that this is the "lowest" of them all, but still pretty good overall. 2.5 stars rounded up.

Storytelling is engaging and not patronizing or filled with self congratulation. The third party narrative helped to insure this was so. Lesson useful re: 3 issues but wanting in specific how to directions.

The example recipes shown in the listing all seem pretty "normal" - blueberry pancakes, roast chicken, orange smoothie - but most of the recipes in the book are more unusual and ethnic. The examples aren't a very good representation of what types of recipes are included. I bought this as a gift for my niece, but she wouldn't eat, much less make, most of the recipes in this book, and she's a fairly adventurous eater. I considered keeping the book, but I wouldn't make hardly any of the recipes, either. I missed the "look inside" feature so didn't see the Table of Contents - my bad. I'm returning this one.

I love this cookbook! I initially purchased for my granddaughters but after reading I decided to keep it for myself. Cooking is not my favorite thing to do but I found that Amber’s recipes inspired me to get in the kitchen. The recipes were not only simple to make but delicious also. The steak spring rolls are my favorite! I love all the time saving tips and tricks. I enjoyed learning natural ways to care for my skin and hair too. It’s definitely a great a cookbook for encouraging teens and kids to take control of their own well-being but it’s perfect for all ages!

We only had this cook book for a few days so we didn't try all of the recipes yet, but the ones we have tried so far all have a common theme; they are tasty, healthy and super easy to make, not only for people that has made food every day for 25+ years like myself, but also for kids & teens. I especially like the part called "double-duty weeknight dinners"; it is a (good) dinner where a part of it is used for a lunch the following day. Same main ingredients obviously, but in a different combination so it doesn't come across as leftovers, but a fresh made from scratch (but isn't) lunch.

Super book for both kids and adults regardless of cooking skill level! Healthy and easy recipes! Great ideas for any meal, snack or party. I really liked the recipes that are “dinner tonight/lunch tomorrow”. And no, it’s not just “reheat leftovers”. Stellar book from an up and coming chef for sure!

Amber is truly an inspiring young Chef. Her passion for cooking shows through in every youtube video. In my opinion she ranks up there with some of the de Cuisine Chefs.The recipes are very well organized and structured. Alot of though thought went into it. Especially adding pictures for every recipe. I love the way every recipe is quick, simple and easy to follow. I have made many recipes and taken to my work for lunch break.There are a number of teen cook books out there this one is the best.Daryl -- A.K.A Pickledham

I first saw Amber Kelly on Jamie Oliver's FoodTube doing bits in London at a food market. she is very charismatic for being so young. But the real reasonI bought the book was that Amber intrigued my seven-year old daughter and gave her an incentive to be in the kitchen and learn to cook, The recipes are basic enough but good enough to inspire kids of all ages to get in the kitchen and do it for themselves. Well done.

This will be my last date with Maisie Dobbs. She has some irritating habits, like zenning-out to discover plot twists. Too much hand wrenching, introspection, and stoicism. If there were even a slight bit of humor to lighten the rigid personality, and situations, I might try again. But, alas.....I actually began these books while awaiting the next Her Royal Spyness romp, which are great fun to read, and a smart main character you can't help but love. Maisie Dobb is tedious. I think I would like the Billy Beale Character, but he is merely a 2 dimensional plot twist to add to Maisie's "depth", unsuccessfully.I tried the Maggie Hope stories, but they were thinly veiled Progressive propaganda, and not well researched.So, now I'll just have to wait.

The Maisie Dobbs Series just keeps getting better! I was first introduced to Maisie Dobbs via Journey to Munich, the latest installment in the series. But I soon realized that I NEEDED to read the entire series, and thus my latest book was Messenger of Truth. In this book, Maisie Dobbs, Psychologist and Investigator, is approached by Georgina Bassinton-Hope to investigate the circumstances surrounding her brother Nick's recent demise. The juxtaposition of the very wealthy Bassinton-Hopes and the poor assistant to Maisie Dobbs, Billy Beale, is very interesting, especially because when Miss B-H, as Billy Beale chooses to call her, is informed of the death of Beale's precious daughter, Lizzy, merely glosses over the death as "oh, too bad (or something like that).." It makes her seem very callous in disregarding the death simply because they couldn't afford the Doctor's visit that may have saved her. In any case, Maisie investigates the death of Nick, an up and coming artist whose fall off of a scaffold doesn't seem to be the accident it was deemed to be. I hesitate to add more information about the book because I don't want to give away the ending of the book!

Maisie Dobbs was born poor, but has moved up into different circles, and she is now working as a psychologist and investigator. But all is not rosy in her life: she has moved away from her former partnership with her mentor, she is unable to commit to her relationship with a young doctor, and she feels that she is only content when she is lost in her work. Set in London during the years after World War I, this mystery shines a light on the disparity between the wealthy and the poor, especially the men and women battered and broken by that war. In this novel, Maisie has been hired by a famous writer to investigate the death of her twin brother, an artist of some renown who paints of war and its consequences. His death, which occurred the day before the unveiling of his new works, is judged to be an accident by the police, but the sister refuses to accept this judgement. This is a fine mystery, well plotted, nicely developed characters, richly described settings. But it is more than that: it is also an examination of how brave, but battered veterans of the battlefields work to understand and move beyond its memories.

A superb series of historical mysteries with a unique "psychologist/investigator" who insists on fixing the people affected by the results of her investigations. There is much time spent on (presumably) accurate fashion notes, visits to various UK locations including Downton Abbey-ish great estates, driving around in a sporty little MG, an encounter with Oswald Mosley, and a major development in Maisie's personal life and another in Billy Beale's. As in previous volumes, the Great War's effects are still present, and the Depression is creeping more and more into the picture.As one can tell from the above, this is a busy book filled with important events that fans of the series will devour. The mystery itself involves an artist, and its resolution was the least convincing one thus far. The descriptions of the artwork fell far short of being convincing.

Halevi is a respected authority who has written several good books on the Qabbalah. This one is a gem. The concise text introduces several key concepts of Qabbalistic thought. Like all the books in Thames & Hudson's "Art & Imagination" series, this one is profusely illustrated ---- after 30 pages of text are 60 pages of pictures & diagrams, all amply explained in accompanying notes. Most of the diagrams have the original Hebrew writing, so this book is a tremendous resource for anyone who reads Hebrew. In particular, I am a big fan of the "extended Tree of Life" diagram on p. 41, showing how the Sefirot play out in the worlds of Azilut, Beriah, Asiyyah, and Yesirah; I have never seen such a detailed diagram of this anywhere else. Between the text and the notes accompanying the diagrams, Halevi makes clear the scriptual origins of the Qabbalah, the beliefs & practices, as well as the influence of the Qabbalah on non-Jewish traditions. I think this book is a wonderful introduction for a modern reader seeking an "in" on the Qabbalah. Even after reading other books, I find myself going back to this book again and again. It is a treasure.

This is my 14th time buying or ordering this book. I reread it every so often for argumentative purposes, but Z'ev Ben Shimon Halevi is a true master of the teachings of Kabbalah. I've been reading the Author's teachings all through college until present day and I'm 33. If you're not fluent with Torah you might struggle a little. This man "IS NOT" one of those crazy Hollywood so called Kabbalah Masters that isn't even Jewish. Mr. Halevi is an extremely bright and able scholar whose mind is as fascinating as the text. I could go on and on, but if you want to study Kabbalah, MAKE SURE your information is coming from someone PURE, and knows Torah through mind, body, and soul!!!!!

This book is a good suppliment to anyone studying Kabbalah. It has dozens of illustrations, going back hundreds of years. The illustrations are fairly well annotated, and the information they contain show the development and art behind kabbalistic principles from the 14th Century to modern times.However, the "book" portion - approximately 45 pages at the beginning - is a firehose of top level information on Kabbalah. Anyone without a good background it it is likely to become lost quickly, as there isn't enough space to really provide foundational information from which the writing in the book is built. Trying ro cover the history, philosophy, anatomy, esoteric, magical, spiritual and sturctural information in 45 pages just can't be done.Get this book for the art and the history that art represents. It is beautiful. As to being a good intro to kabbalah - I'd pass - find something else and get this as a suppliment.
