I’ve been eagerly awaiting Cecelia Mecca’s THE SCOT’S SECRET when the author first hinted at it at the end of THE CHIEF’S MAIDEN. I love her Border series and this one was no exception. Clara and Alex are fantastic together. I love their chemistry. I also love the other characters and really enjoyed seeing them incorporated into this story making me feel as though I was visiting old friends. And we finally get an answer to a long-awaited question (squeals). All that said, Ms. Mecca creates a rich world of engaging characters who are entertaining and lovable, often despite themselves and her series is well worth the read.
The Scot's Secret sucks you into the world of the medieval Borderlands between England and Scotland from the very beginning. This is a great setting for a book because the region is so full of tension, intrigue and age-old battles. And Cecelia Mecca is so good at recreating the culture, conflict and history of the medieval world that you will feel transported to the Borderlands. I loved all the books in the Border Series, but I think it just keeps getting better. You do not need to read the earlier books to understand the Scot's Secret because Cecelia does a good job of grounding you in the series, but trust me, you will want to read all the wonderful tales and revisit your old friends in Book 4.Alex is the second son of the Scottish Laird of the Kerr Clan. Like all "second sons" of the time, he struggles to find his role in the clan. He choses to become a warrior and train the other warriors of the clan to support his brother, the laird, in his reign. But Alex has dark secrets and a festering hatred for the English. It is increasingly difficult to avoid the English now that his family is intertwined and intermarried with the English lords across the border.Englishwoman Clara has been hiding behind the guise of a squire to keep her own dark past a secret. No spoilers here, but an increasing attraction to Alex is making it harder for her to hide her identity. The book build a tantalizing sexual tension as the attraction between Alex and Clara threatens to burst. There are some steamy sex scenes ahead!This series of books feels so realistic and the vivid descriptions of medieval life and times makes it so easy to become part of the romance that you feel like you have traveled back in time. Enjoy.
Amazing!! Not only amazing but heartwarming, intriguing, passionate. Just a few words to describe this book. Why would a woman disguise herself as a lad for many years? Dear reader, that is the question! To hide in plain sight, Lady Clara presented herself as Alfred, a lowly squire, who followed the jousting tournaments, aiding the knights. The last knight Clara squired for was Toren Kerr, who figured out she was female and reaized she was terrified to be found out. So he and his new wife take Clara home and Toren hands her over to his brother Alex to become his squire. This is were the story really takes off. Alex sees Clara as the female she is and begins questioning her as to who she is and why she is hiding. They travel together on a journey to find Alex's mother and the sparks begin to fly. To say that they are attracted to each other is too mild a description! Cecelia Mecca is a master at descriptions and characterizations that make you feel you are there with Alex and Clara. This is a story full of adventure, intrigue and surprising secrets that come to light. When the last page is turned you will draw a heavy sigh and hope that the next book in this series will come out soon!!! Well Done Cecelia Mecca as always!!
This was a very clever story. The characters are well described and likable. The story line immediately will interest the reader. Lady Clara, an Englishwoman, has been on the run for 6 years and her life is still in danger. To hide, she disguises herself as a young squire named Alfred and is taken to Alex Kerr in Scotland to be trained in an apprentice capacity. Alex recognizes that “he†is not squire material and is actually a “sheâ€. Can he trust her? Why is she in hiding? Will he continue to allow her to stay hidden for her safety? And how will her developing feelings for Alex complicate things for both of them?I enjoyed this book and recommend it. It’s a very satisfying love story and I think readers will absolutely love it!
Medieval Scotland, one of my favorite historical time and places was extremely volatile on the border with England. The privilege of being on Cecelia Mecca’s ARC team as afforded me hours of delight reading her Border Series. The fourth and most recent did not disappoint...in fact I feel the author gets better and better. She paints landscapes so vibrantly that one not only sees the surrounding area, but smells, hears and feels it to. The story’s, very character based with such unique, diverse and complex people with strong family ties, are suspenseful, quick paced, dangerous and passionate. Each book can be enjoyed on it’s own and in any order, but I love that I either get to meet up with old friends or hear of them since they are connected. Cecelia Mecca has quickly become one of my favorite authors because she not only weaves tales I can loose myself in, but her skill of breathing life into not only a character, but whole familiesâ£ï¸
