I bought the book and read it. I liked it. I am not a literary critic so take my opinion for what it's worth. The reason I liked it was because it was fast moving. There was always something happening. It was fiction but set within a historical context. The Holocaust and WW2 are two things that interest me. I have actually been to Auschwitz and stood in the gas chamber and looked in the furnaces. It is a cold, evil place. My mind found it hard to comprehend what happened there. What particularity impressed me was how the author got inside the head of the main character expressing feelings and thoughts. I don't know who is responsible for it but there were spaces between each printed line. It made it much easier for an old man to read. I also liked the illustrations (drawings?). I am not sure of the correct name. The author did a good job on this book.
I literally couldn't breathe while reading this book! The co-mingling of the words with the visual imagery is stunning and entranced me well beyond my normal reading experience (and I love to read!). The story speaks for itself and grips you in such a way that you physically feel its presence days and even weeks after putting this book down. What the Night Sings brings to light the gift of faith and hope, even amidst the darkest and most evil circumstances. It is a MUST READ, especially for young adults who are on the threshold of becoming citizens of the world. *Highly recommend!!
Where to begin with this absolutely gorgeous book, necessary as much or more now, as ever. The illustrations are gorgeous and haunting. The story is at once heartbreaking and uplifting. This falls into the category of reading that should be required yet will still unquestionably move you.
This was really unique in that it’s a YA book with lots of illustrations within. They were drawn based mostly on a visit by the author to Auschwitz and the interpretations are moving. Sometimes the story is a little slow, but it’s an interesting perspective and sometimes heavier than expected. It’s a quick read for an adult, but well worth the read and a beautiful addition to a personal library.
I’m right in the middle of the book! It’s so beautiful and engaging and heartbreaking, but necessary. I love the artwork and storytelling, thank you Vesper Stamper for making this! My sister is an opera singer and did her masters thesis on poetry written by children in Theresienstadt, the works titled “I Never Saw Another Butterfly†set to music, so the book really reminds of that and all the music she shared with us from it. This is also the first book I’ve read in a long time that’s kept me turning pages until late at night, and thinking about it the next day. Keep writing more books!
Hannah’s Review: This book blew me away! You might as well purchase a couple of them because as soon as you finish the last page you’re going to want everyone you know to read it as well. This amazing story points to aspects of the Holocaust I never considered and features gorgeous illustrations that capture the emotions that spill off every page.
An absolutely beautiful story about a young teen who survives the holocaust. We learn of her struggles, her story and see her survive and begin again after the loss of her family. Thank you for giving this perspective, there’s no greater strength than learning about the past to be sure such atrocities don’t occur again in the future.
Not since "The Diary of Anne Frank" has a work of literature told such a haunting and poignant story of The Holocaust through the eyes of a young girl. Stamper artfully describes the daily mixture of humanity and horror for the inmates of the Nazi concentration camps, and how indomitable and resilient the spirit of youth can be even in the aftermath of such tragedy and loss.
