This is a fun compilation of what exactly makes one a Catholic Hipster.Each 'chapter' is broken into 4 subsections: Random information from the author, a "Cool Saint," a forgotten prayer (typically related to the saint and/or topic), and an activity for the reader. For the authors whose voices I know (radio, podcasts, etc.), I could even hear them in my head as I read.A few things jumped out to me:- Saint Epaphras, whom I didn't think I'd ever heard of, is in the Bible.- Sergio Bermudez's Catholic slang made me laugh.- The Francis de Sales prayer- Melissa Keating's tunes (which I need to look more into)- Sarah Vabulas' info on scapulars- Lisa Hende's must-have apps (some of which I have, and one I downloaded to replace another app)- Anna Mitchell's info on the old calendar (which I didn't even know about...and a lot of the info was new to me)- Arlene Spencey on being a Catholic in a Protestant private school (a story I freaking loved)I've learned I'm not a Catholic hipster and yet I wouldn't feel out of place among them, standing off to the side and laughing along with the conversations.And then leaning in to learn more about my faith.

If you are looking for a fun read that still manages to remind you of what makes being Catholic cool yet countercultural, this is the book for you! And you do not need to be a hipster to enjoy it.I found this gem of a book, co-written by about 15 bloggers and authors, to be a wonderful collection of Catholic devotions and practices, with each chapter liberally supported by a classic prayer, a short biography of a saint related to the topic at hand and an activity that will help you put your faith in action.Each section starts with the word “rediscover” … Rediscover the Attitude, Rediscover the Stuff, Rediscover the Life, and Rediscover the Attraction. The book reminds us of the who we are in God’s eyes – that we are children of God and that we loved. It reminds us about the catholic practices that may have been left by the wayside but are being rediscovered by a new generation: from novenas, to chaplets to relics and brewing beer, growing beards and wearing sandals … all the while not being afraid of having a good sense of humor and a good dose of laughter with friends.If you think our faith is boring, or irrelevant or just passé, check out this fun book, and rediscover (or discover for the first time) what continues to draw young people to this beautiful and ancient faith.

This book is full of fun, thoughtful essays that have me laughing, praying differently, looking up Catholic slang (still not sure which ones were included as a joke. My guess is the disclaimer was a red herring) and detouring my route to visit the nearest shrine. It might be time to dig out the ol' rosary and scapular again...

Let's face it...there's no good way to give a completely unbiased opinion about religion or hipsters. I went into this book with a disgruntled opinion based on childhood experiences regarding those I saw within places of power in the Catholic church abusing their power, and when I think "hipster"...I just cringe.So how did I walk away giving it a four out of five star review? Well, honestly, because it jolted a lot of things into place for me:1) It reminded me that what drove me from Catholicism was the actions of a few select people, not the religion as a whole. As the only Christian religion to recognize saints, there's a lot of great people in the religion, too. I loved the stories of the different saints as a child, and this book helped remind me of some of those.2) Each section of the book includes a "forgotten prayer". Some of them were absolutely beautiful to me and touched things I should be saying to God on a regular basis, even as a Christian who isn't Catholic.3) Each section also included an activity to further a reader's understanding of the chapter. Some of them were easier to accomplish than others, but it was engaging to follow those along.4) The book made it incredibly easy to see links between Christianity, and Catholicism, and many of the "hipster traits". From sandaled feet to scraggly beards, the reasons behind them are actually in the BIBLE, and it's a conversation starter right there before you.

Good content, However, to make it more user friendly and valuable, this work needs an index! If the goal is to make readers more aware of valuable prayers and Catholic saints, one should be able to find them quickly.

The handbook approach is very sincere and follows our Catholic Religion - but in a creative way for the younger people of faith.This was purchased for one of our millennial relatives but it is so good, we haven't decided which one should receive it.

Entertaining and informative book - especially enjoy some of the obscure saints. I like the variety of contributors and think this is a good companion to the podcast that Tighe is part of.

Gave this as a gift to my son who is probably the most hipster-y Catholic you can imagine and he really liked it! He said he was surprised that it had some good stuff in there that he didn't know.

I was looking for Cinderella variations for a 4th grade class and this was a recommended title. The story was definitely a Cindy variation but a little bloody for 4th grade. I will have to be cautious in choosing who uses this. Wish I had known before purchasing.

Well i love this story because it is much like the cinderella story but it is with a boy this time. It shows his adventures and the friendship between Billy and the bull. It shows that good always prevails over evil. That is why i would really recommend this book to broaden your imagination and creativity.

Best children's book available: "I got a piece of pie for telling a lie and then I came slithering home." I encountered this story in a Collier's collection in my youth, 45 years ago, and have never forgotten it. A wonderful story.

Diana Gabaldon, author of the Outlander Series, wrote an explanation regarding the short stories (short being a relative term when it comes to this author and I'm not complaining!) she has written and published about Lord John Grey. She basically explained that she found herself becoming very interested in this character apart from his supporting role in her books. She decided to write about him to see where this led, and what his life separate from the series itself, would tell her about him. Authors often do this, I've come to understand, with regard to supporting characters and the like who show up in the writing of their main story lines. They learn more about that character and why they are who they seem to be through this exercise. It is fortunate for us, her readers, that she became so interested in Lord John Grey, and decided to share his backstory, so to speak, with the people who love The Outlander books.After reading this book, the first of the Lord John books, I found that I liked him even more than I already did through the main books. I enjoyed getting to know even more about this man who is, above all, an honorable man of his word and a rare human being in that he is loyal beyond question to those people he loves, regardless of how that love is returned. Lord John, to my way of thinking, is the kind of human being that we should all aspire to be. He is also a huge breath of fresh air when compared to the likes of say, Black Jack Randall.This teaches us that simply because a person "belongs to the enemy", it does not follow that every person on the "other side" is a bad person. We are reminded that there are both good and bad people on both sides of any conflict, regardless of which side they stand on. This is true of the military, in particular throughout history. The word "enemy" is attached to a country by the leaders of another country. It follows that the military for either side of the conflict has no choice; they are a weapon that is armed, aimed and fired wherever and at whoever the leaders of their country dictate. They feel all the same sorts of things that the troops deployed against them feel, and their personal feelings are of no consideration. As an American, it put me in mind of how Americans treated their own troops during Vietnam. Thank goodness that public awareness has come far enough now, that people no longer disrespect our soldiers. We seem to have realized that they have no say in anything when it comes to any military action.I apologize that I have digressed, but in this case I felt obliged to share what general thoughts I had that were provoked by reading both the Outlander books, and the Lord John novels. As to this book, as well as every book in print and every novella or short story only available as a download, I love them all. They are wonderfully written in the style we've come to love and expect from Diana Gabaldon. They add an extra depth and richness to the Outlander saga, that while unneeded--the Outlander Series is extremely rich and fulfilling all on its own--is an unexpected bonus from this outstanding author of historical fiction.**If you have not read the Outlander Series, I'm afraid that while the Lord John novels arguably can stand alone, you won't understand passing references to characters that you would otherwise know very well from the book series, thereby leaving a good bit of information about Lord John himself, as well as what takes place when he is involved in those books. I'm afraid they might leave you feeling a bit confused even. I can heartily recommend the series itself as well as the Lord John novels.*****New Outlander Series Readers: I've been reading this series since the very first book came out in hardback about twenty years ago, and I am enjoying the new made for television adaptation of the first book, The Outlander. I'm enjoying it so much that I've been rereading all the books and novels to date. Through my recommendation of the show to friends and family, at least four people have started reading the books. I recommend the same order to them that I will suggest to you...read the first 5 books in the Outlander Series, then stop and read all of the Lord John books in order and if you have the hardware necessary, download and read the two novellas only available via download...Amazon has everything Gabaldon has written) then go on to Book 6 from the Outlander books. You can't go wrong with that timing, I promise! HAPPY VIEWING AND READING!***

I finally got around to reading this sister series of Diana Gabaldon's. I've meant to for a while, but now that 7 Stones is out, Diana indicates that these should be read first so I needed to get on it! While not quite as wonderful as the Outlander series, it was still great to get more background on Lord John, and even better getting brief glimpses of Jamie (through flashbacks) through Lord John's eyes. Lord John has been a character that I have sort of grudgingly accepted, but this book has given me a greater respect for him. Perhaps if I had have read all the books in the order that Diana had written them I would have liked him more from the start. The story centered mainly around Lavender House, a sort of meeting house for men to liaise with other men in historical London. This is a topic I know very little about, so it was all extremely fascinating to read.

And while I admit I only gave the series a try because Jamie does share pov in The Scottish Prisoner (wonderful book, btw), I've continued the series because of LJG.The Private Matter is an intriguing and surprising Historical Mystery, told with the dry wit only LJG does best. I loved the mystery, which was two-fold. Not only is John charged with solving a soldier's murder, but is also trying to determine if his cousin's fiance has the pox. Drama, indeed. John's search takes him all over London and London's society, even to the Lavender House, a refuge for men who enjoy the "company" of other men. We see John at his best, solving crime and other people's problems.I enjoyed the entire story, truly. The most touching moment, though, is when I fully realized how deeply John must stay closeted. That he must take care of how he looks at other men, the worry that he will be discovered and what that could mean. And, that the man he loves will always be out of his reach.I'm so looking forward to reading Brotherhood of the Blade, and am happy to have learned LJG will be getting a fourth book!

Had I read this one first, I might not have gone on to read the others in the LJ series. For me, the book lacked the depth of character development that I have to come to enjoy from Ms. Gabaldon. Couple that with a weighty, convoluted intrigue and slower than usual pacing and I have a book that struggled to maintain my interest.Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad book. It's just NOT among the best of Ms. Gabaldon's efforts.

Lord John Grey is a major in His Majesty's army . He is entrusted with searching for the answers to two murders and to a spy selling secrets. Lord John discovers a man by the name of O'Connell may have sold military secrets to an enemy spy. There are plenty of clues to all three crimes, but they're not coming together in a cohesive answer. Perhaps they are all separate crimes and not tied together. Will Lord John Grey discover the answers before it's too late?Diana Gabaldon has written another winner. Lord John Grey is a character from the Outlander series. He, along with the secondary characters, are a delight to make the acquaintance of. We come to fully understand Lord John's character through dialogue and descriptions. The plot and subplots are tightly drawn and feel feasible. The setting and description places the reader directly in the story. There is a m/m sexual scene tastefully written. I highly recommend this novel.
