In Mark Kurlansky's wonderful book, The Big Oyster: History on the Half Shell we learn about the bivalve bounty that once existed off the shores of Manhattan. Kurlansnky writes, "By 1880, New York was the undisputed capital of history's greatest oyster boom in its golden age, which lasted until at least 1910. The oyster beds of the New York area were producing 700 million oysters a year."The first blow to oyster production was sewage. "The reality is that millions of people produce far too much sewage to co-exist with millions of oysters...A million times worse than pollution happened. The silt and sludge alone would have been enough to kill oysters, which would sink in it and suffocate. But the industrial wastes consisted of heavy metals, including seven thousand pounds of zinc, copper, lead chromium, and nickel that entered the city sewer system every day...Between the 1940's and the 1970's, General Electric dumped hundreds of thousand of pounds of polycholorinated biphenyls, PCBs, into the Hudson..Concentrations of six heavy metals were found in the 1980's in the central muddy portion of the bay (Raritan). They had entered the water from the many factories built on the Raritan Rover during World War II. With the sentiment "anything for the war effort," these industries were allowed to freely dump into the river, and the practice continued after the war. In 1978, Raritan Bay was found to have the highest concentration of hydrocarbons. Fish in the bay were found to be laced with PCBs. The fish were often misshapen by a pollution-caused disease known as "fin-erosion disease." The Big Oyster.World War II was the most destructive war in the history of mankind claiming the lives of around 60 to 70 million casualties worldwide; another casualty was the oyster beds of New York. America's Military Industrial Complex may have knocked off Hitler and Tojo, liberated the Nazi and Japanese concentration camps, but it also has the death of billions of oysters on its hands as well. New York and New Jersey had to co-operate on who could harvest where as certain areas were disputable.*The Bronx borough was named after a Swedish-born sea captain named Bronck.*The Battle of Brooklyn was the largest land battle of the Revolutionary War.*In 1773 there were 396 Taverns in Manhattan*In 1750 NYC was the leading American city for oyster and alcohol consumption.*Gangs such as the "Swamp Angels, Dead Rabbits, and Daybreak Boys" fought lethal and violent battles against one another, and gang fights could involve 1,000 gang members in the fights.*The 1863 anti-draft riot involved 50-70,000 rioters with killings, torture, gangs, and burning.*Oysters can live without water for days, and even longer if sprinkled with oatmeal for food.*The word "cookies" comes from the Dutch word "koeckjes"As for lifestyle, Manhattan was not as austere as the Puritan areas to the north, thanks to the first controllers, the Dutch. Captain Kidd lived in Manhattan was a celebrity there. He went up to Boston where he was arrested, sent to England, and hanged. "Boston, was never New York."Not only were oysters ubiquitous in the vast waterways of the entire New York region, but they were very affordable, provided protein and food for the poor. The essays in this book set out to advance the discussion on a number of important contemporary positions in Western analytic philosophy using resources from Chinese philosophy which includes, but is not limited to, the Confucian, Daoist, and Buddhist traditions.As the editor Brian Bruya explains, the model for an essay written for this volume was based on the following: 1) that it addresses a topic recognizable to someone familiar with the various subfields of analytic philosophy, 2) that it clearly defines terms and positions and historic literature (Asian and Western) without engaging in unfounded speculation, 3) that it advances the current discussion in some way perhaps by supporting a minority view or contradicting a prominent position. The model also doesn’t require reference to Chinese sources but does ask for ideas that are at least inspired by Chinese tradition.There's no reason why a book can't focus solely on a single philosophical culture such as this one on China. But one must keep in mind that the challenge to Western thought comes equally from many streams of Indian/South Asian philosophy—various Brahmanical as well as Jain and Buddhist traditions. Buddhist thought of course spans several major world cultures—India, China, Tibet, Japan, Korea, and SE Asian cultures—that combined, have arguably been infiltrating Western thought more than indigenous Chinese philosophy. Important volumes in this regard are Jay Garfield’s recent "Engaging Buddhism: Why It Matters to Philosophy" and Brook Ziporyn’s "Being and Ambiguity: Philosophical Experiments with Tiantai Buddhism"… but there are dozens, if not hundreds, of others.With volumes like this and Bauer and Bell’s "The East Asian Challenge for Human Rights," Bell and Li’s "The East Asian Challenge for Democracy," and the “moon series”—Buddhist reflections on analytic philosophy by the writing group that calls themselves “the Cowherds” ("Moonpaths", "Moonshadows", "Pointing at the Moon", "The Moon Points Back"), there’s no longer any excuse for contemporary philosophers not to be conversant in the philosophical thought of other great world cultures.

The main character of the story is Brian Bailey, CEO of JMJ Fitness Machines. Brian loves his work at JMJ and his world suddenly changes when JMJ is sold. Now Brian must make a new life for himself in retirement. While Brian tries his best to enjoy retirement, there is something nagging at him. He wonders if the culture he created at JMJ was a fluke or something he could do again. Much to the surprise of his family and friends, he buys into a local pizza joint (Gene & Joe's) and takes on the role of assistant manager.Brian spent a lot of time thinking through what it was that created the culture at JMJ and narrowed it down to the following:*"People cannot be fulfilled in their work if they are not known." (anonymity)*"Everyone needs to know that their job matters, to someone. Anyone." (irrelevance)*"Employees need to be able to gauge their progress and level of contribution for themselves." (immeasurement)Much of the story chronicles the ups and downs as Brian puts his plan into action at Gene & Joe's. Once Brian has things moving along at a good pace at the restaurant, he excitedly finds himself thrust back into the C-suite as the new CEO of Desert Mountain Sports. Now Brian has the opportunity to take what he put into action at Gene & Joe's and apply it on a much larger scale. The story makes for a fast and enjoyable read, so I'll end there with the spoilers.I highly recommend this and every other leadership fable written by Patrick Lencioni. As leaders, we need to always be ready to learn and grow, so we can be better equipped to help our employees to find fulfillment, relevance, and success in the place that they spend nearly half of their waking hours Monday through Friday. 'The Three Signs of a Miserable Job' offers a reasonable framework to make that happen.

As usual, he uses a fable to make his point. He tells the story of Brian Bailey, a retired CEO who is trying to determine why people hate their jobs and how it can be fixed. Through the fable and the more direct final section, Lencioni identifies three forces that make a job miserable: anonymity, irrelevance, and immeasurement.When workers feel anonymous, especially to the boss, they tend not to care about their work. They just want to get through the day and go home. It is up to the manager to take a genuine interest in each person so that this anonymity is dispelled.When people feel irrelevant to the company, they often decide that their work doesn't matter. While they may be key to the success of the organization, they may not know that. Someone needs to tell then the role they play and how their work helps others.While immeasurement may be a word that Lencioni has created, it is a simple concept. Workers need to be able to measure success. They need to know that they have fulfilled their goal. We have to be careful to measure things that we can control, but we all need some way of knowing that we have succeeded.Lencioni is clear that these are simple concepts, but his insights are excellent. As usual, Lencioni takes very simple things and shows that any manager can master them with some effort. This is one more really helpful tool in leading people.

The details about the book online say all that you really need to know. There is not much more depth other than the preview pages and end flaps. The only thing that kept me reading was the colorful details of the characters in the storyline. I had expected more. I got so much out of his other books that this is the "lowest" of them all, but still pretty good overall. 2.5 stars rounded up.

Storytelling is engaging and not patronizing or filled with self congratulation. The third party narrative helped to insure this was so. Lesson useful re: 3 issues but wanting in specific how to directions.

The example recipes shown in the listing all seem pretty "normal" - blueberry pancakes, roast chicken, orange smoothie - but most of the recipes in the book are more unusual and ethnic. The examples aren't a very good representation of what types of recipes are included. I bought this as a gift for my niece, but she wouldn't eat, much less make, most of the recipes in this book, and she's a fairly adventurous eater. I considered keeping the book, but I wouldn't make hardly any of the recipes, either. I missed the "look inside" feature so didn't see the Table of Contents - my bad. I'm returning this one.

I love this cookbook! I initially purchased for my granddaughters but after reading I decided to keep it for myself. Cooking is not my favorite thing to do but I found that Amber’s recipes inspired me to get in the kitchen. The recipes were not only simple to make but delicious also. The steak spring rolls are my favorite! I love all the time saving tips and tricks. I enjoyed learning natural ways to care for my skin and hair too. It’s definitely a great a cookbook for encouraging teens and kids to take control of their own well-being but it’s perfect for all ages!

We only had this cook book for a few days so we didn't try all of the recipes yet, but the ones we have tried so far all have a common theme; they are tasty, healthy and super easy to make, not only for people that has made food every day for 25+ years like myself, but also for kids & teens. I especially like the part called "double-duty weeknight dinners"; it is a (good) dinner where a part of it is used for a lunch the following day. Same main ingredients obviously, but in a different combination so it doesn't come across as leftovers, but a fresh made from scratch (but isn't) lunch.

Super book for both kids and adults regardless of cooking skill level! Healthy and easy recipes! Great ideas for any meal, snack or party. I really liked the recipes that are “dinner tonight/lunch tomorrow”. And no, it’s not just “reheat leftovers”. Stellar book from an up and coming chef for sure!

Amber is truly an inspiring young Chef. Her passion for cooking shows through in every youtube video. In my opinion she ranks up there with some of the de Cuisine Chefs.The recipes are very well organized and structured. Alot of though thought went into it. Especially adding pictures for every recipe. I love the way every recipe is quick, simple and easy to follow. I first saw Amber Kelly on Jamie Oliver's FoodTube doing bits in London at a food market. she is very charismatic for being so young. But the real reasonI bought the book was that Amber intrigued my seven-year old daughter and gave her an incentive to be in the kitchen and learn to cook, The recipes are basic enough but good enough to inspire kids of all ages to get in the kitchen and do it for themselves. Well done.
