Did you know that there was a patriotic comic book hero that predated Captain America? Did you know that this hero is the reason Timely Comics chose to switch from his triangular flag-oriented shield to the now-iconic discus shield? That hero is, aptly enough, The Shield, and Rik Offenberger covers him and his pals quite well in this reference book, which includes a few public-domain stories of some of the heroes that started in what we now know as Archie Comics. The majority of the book is great reference material and interviews with some of the surviving writers and artists behind the creation and continuation of the Mighty Crusaders.

Also contains reprints of Black Hood from Top Notch Comics 19 Sep 41; Steel Sterling from Zip Comics 1 Feb 40; The Web from Zip Comics 27 Jul 42; Shield from Pep Comics 30 Aug 42; and Hangman from Pep Comics 17 Jul 41. Otherwise. the history covers the Golden Age to today (2016).

Very neat that it includes some Golden Age MLJ material. Pretty good coverage of the 1940s material. Not nearly enough pages on the 1950s Jaguar and Fly era. The 1960s coverage is essentially a slam piece, so if you enjoyed the over-the-top comedy era you may well feel insulted that the book is essentially from the perspective of non-fans who don't get it. Nice coverage of the 1980s revival era shepherded by Rich Buckler. Good coverage of the Impact! era. Far too many pages spent on stuff that never got published and fawning over god awful "grim and gritty" 90s style "reimaginings" of classic characters that were already "imagined" just fine, thank you. Way too many pages on the craptastic "Dark Circle" wherein the writers and artists desperately want to be taken seriously, which unfortunately means no joy or whimsy can ever be seen in the comics anymore.

If nothing else, this impressively in-depth compendium proves the resilience of the MLJ/Archie Comics characters. Reprints of the 1940s comics are the real prize here, with stories featuring the Black Hood, Steel Sterling, the Shield & Dusty, the Web and the Hangman (in his big debut, bringing justice to the men who murdered his superhero brother, the Comet) making it a collectors' item, Those hoping for a detailed analysis/history of the remarkable number of revivals from World War II to the present day will not be disappointed, either. It's a big, thick book that has all the details chronicling the many incarnations of the heroes who banded together to form the popular super-team called the Mighty Crusaders. Pages from Joe Simon and Jack Kirby's Kirby's first issues of "The Fly" and their take on The Shield, "The Double Life of Private Strong," from 1959 are presented as examples of what would become the Mighty Comics line, even though they occurred in the pre-Red Circle/Blue Ribbon/Archie Adventure Comics time frame, In fact, the only missing connection between the '40s and the '50s/'60s eras is a mention of the dramatic impact Jack Kirby had on Irv Novick when they both worked together on "Shield Wizard" #7. Suddenly, Novick (who went on to be one of the best Batman artists) was panel-busting with the best of them. The late '50s/early '60scomics were as good as many DC titles of the time, while the mid-'60s presented an approach to storytelling that seemed as if it was lifted from the "Batman" TV series. Helmed by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel, these wacky books have their partisans and, while I'm not one of them, there is something about the "Too Many Superheroes" issue of The Mighty Crusaders that makes it a one-of-a-kind hoot. DC had the characters for two runs, under the Impact logo in 1991 and the Red Circle imprint in 2009, although the latter consisted of a few titles scripted by J. Michael Straczynski, with only the Shield comics, continued by Eric Trautmann, reaching a tenth issue. Reprints of the '40s comics, now in public domain, have made the dream of owning these rare comics a low-cost reality. Yes, they retain the flaws of the originals (occasionally poor color registration, for example), but I never thought I'd own a complete collection of Bob Fugi's run on "The Hangman" or Novick's best work on the Shield, for example, let alone "King" Kirby's guest-art issue of Shield-Wizard #7. (These can be found by looking up publisher Kari Therrian and the title of the comic book.) It must be said that no one brought more class to the line than Rich Buckler and his crew, whose Blue Ribbon/Red Circle/Archie Adventure Comics run was the most consistent in quality. For example, Steve Ditko was drawing "The Fly" at one point, "The Fox" was by Alex Toth and the Black Hood topped them with the great work of Gray Morrow. Otherwise, one can only wonder what might have been if Straczynski's interpretations of the MLJ characters had lasted, but, as all too often happened, they were here and then they were gone. For now, we have the excellent crime thriller-oriented "Black Hood" and Dean Haspiel's quirky take on "The Fox" from Dark Circle Comics. More importantly, we have the MLJ Companion, a remarkable work composed of comprehensive reference material.

The result is a fine 'must' for any comics and graphic novel collection in general and Mighty Crusaders enthusiasts in particular.

A very interesting, heavily illustrated overview of the history of the MLJ superheros in all their incarnations. While I would have preferred a volume focusing more on the golden age, when the characters were at the height of their success, I understand the need to cover later eras to appeal to a broader audience. Well written and reasonably priced; very happy to add this to my library.

My son currently is taking ballet, I was told I should have him read the popular ballet stories so that he would have an understanding of the story before auditioning or performing pieces from the ballet. This book has several stories, it has a cd included with music from the ballets (the book will tell you to listen to a track that coincides witht the reading) the book is not childish at all and would be benificial to dancers of all ages. It is great for the begining dancer or reader with little to no knowledge of ballet as it explains the history, different positions,etc.Having a son taking ballet I also appreciate that the book is not completly girly. It is very hard to find things for male dancers.This book is much more than I had hoped for. I am very impressed with it and I highly recommend it to ANYONE. It is a complete overview of the most popular ballets wrapped up in one little book. The CD in my opinion completed the package making it a terrific value and recourse.So to sum it up BUY this book!!

I bought this book for my young grand daughters who have been in ballet classes for 3 years. The book is very fun for them and very informative of the beginnings of ballet. The girls (6 & 7), were so excited that the book also included a CD of different popular ballets. The book has a lot of interesting facts and has been a lot of fun reading to them. Well worth the money.

This is incredible with watercolor detail pictures, stories throughout on the history of ballet, instructional ballet and even ballet music. Hardcover with a jacket and we love the cd inside that goes with the stories. A beautiful edition to any child's library!

I first read this book with I was eleven or twelve years old. I stayed in the libary at my middle school looking for books. I liked to expierement and try new authors or books. This one grabbed me becaue of the synopsis. I liked it and when I read it, I fell in love with Dicey and her siblings. THis story was well written and showed the strenght of four kids trying to find a way to thier grandmother's after being abandoned by thier mother in a mall parking lot.

It's still true. It's still true that Dicey and her three brothers and sisters are alone. It's still true that their mother abandoned them at a mall in Connecticut. It's still true that they have very little money. And it's still true that twelve-year-old Dicey must keep them safe, fed, and together. Dicey knows that if they contact the authorities, the siblings will most likely be split up in foster care. So, in a way that is clever, intuitive, and brave, Dicey leads her brothers and sisters from Bridgeport, Connecticut, to their Gram's house by the Chesapeake Bay in Massachusetts. The long journey leads the four children into danger and hunger, but Dicey Tillerman courageously and cleverly finds ways to keep them fed, warm, and away from authorities. At long last, the four find their way to Gram's house, where they have a home at last, perhaps. It's still true that their mother has abandoned them, and it's still true that children are wise, resourceful, and funny. I couldn't put this book down. But the result is so satisfying as they come to their journey's end and even fight to survive there. What victory and strength you'll discover as these four brothers and sisters depend on each other, fight their way through sorrow, hunger, heat, rejection and all through it discover their strengths and talents to make a life in this hard world. I've loved this book since I was a kid. I've enjoyed reading it to my kids a couple of times now. We used it as a book club book for my son when he was entering 5th grade, and later again, at my daughter's request, for her book club as she was entering 5th grade, as well. (Both are strong readers. The book is 400 pages and may be more than some want to tackle at that age.) This book is full of strong, quirky personalities and strong bonds between siblings. It's a great family read. It lends itself well to discussions of what it's like to not have money and what is most important for happiness.Homecoming is the first of many great books following an overlapping set of characters. Dicey's Song and A Solitary Blue (both award-winning) and The Runner are also favorites from my childhood and with my children.

I read "The Tillerman Series" when I was in 6th or 7th grade, and I absolutely loved them then. I remember really feeling connected to the characters. I was in awe of how Dicey (the oldest sibling) led her family across states in order to find a home for them.A few years ago, I decided that I wanted to try to buy all of my favorite books from when I was a child. "The Tillerman Series" were some of the first ones I put on my list. I finally bought "Homecoming" a few months ago, and I'm SO glad that I did!I think that I might have enjoyed it even more this time around. Cynthia Voigt does a wonderful job of letting you inside of their family. Being an adult, and knowing how hard it is to "make it" sometimes, I had a real sense of admiration for the kids in the book. I know that there really are kids like that in the world, and it made me thankful to have a great family. I would highly recommend this book (and the rest of the series) to anyone from ages 12 to adults.

Loved this book as a kid and enjoying reading it now with my children. Probably best for 12 or 13 years or older just because the print is fairly small. I’m reading it aloud to my kids (10 and 11), but I think they would be capable of reading and understanding it themselves.

I'm a huge fan of YA fiction, when it's not pandering to the lowest common denominator. Madeleine L'Engles "A Wrinkle In Time" and "And Both Were Young" are hallmark books for me; I tend to judge other YA novels against them, for better or worse. I want to be enfolded by a book. I want it to take me over. I want to put it down with a sigh and immediately begin planning when I'll have time to pick it up again. I want the characters to live inside my head, and my heart. "Homecoming" does all of that, as does the follow-up "Dicey's Song". A marvelous book.

I have read on the order of fifty Holocaust survivor stories, maybe more. This was written by a very unusual survivor. Someone who lived among the population, sometimes Free & on occasion i prison. Her interactions with a wide variety of people from various attitudes and cultures makes it an interesting novel.Instead of individual survival, Alicia also spent much of her time caring for others along the way. She shows great thoughtfulness and maturity during a time when I'm sure she would have preferred to have a life provided for her. She is honest about the mistakes she makes and the consequences. She admits when things just happen to go a certain way for no decernable reason.Beware, it is not a book where everything turns out alright. Alicia experiences greasing and continuing losses as her life is pulled from like the removal of finger and toenails. She is a passionate young lady who fights against the odds. She does not give up.This book is a very gook peak into Poland's people's and events during WW11. It can be upsetting. You need to be able absorb the blows, admitvthey were, everyone of them, horribly unjust, and realize they are being repeated today in Syria. This is what is perhaps disturbing. Despite our knowledge and acknowledgment of the "mistakes" (WAY too mild an adjective) of the past we blindly repeat them again and again.Regardless of where you are coming from on this and other issues, this is a fascinating book that will keep you hooked like a great suspense novel. I invite you to learn new things in one of the more enjoyable ways by reading about the lives of those who experienced the events first hand. From the trees, we can begin to understand the forest. (But we cannot build the forest from these singular trees, we use them to better see the true nature of the forest).

I just finished reading Alicia: my story, and the story is staying in my head. I can not let it go what happened to this young girl during the Holocaust. The books that I have read so far about the Holocaust have not been as compelling as this one. How she was able to endure all the tragic that killed her family, friends, unbelievable. She just kept on going and starting to fight back against Nazi's Poles, etc. She is driven to survive each horrendous event and near death experiences with quick thinking, compassion for others, and wisdom far beyond her years. Horrific does not even begin to describe the Holocaust, but Alicia shares her own factual horrors, with no animosity or victim mentality. Every area of her life, is an example from which her readers can learn. Every high school should have this on their mandatory reading list and I am very surprised that her story has not been made into a movie. With all the dangers that Alicia endured, everyone should read this book or watch the movie, if there ever is one made of this brave and courageous lady.

This was a phenomenal memoir! As others have said, different from a lot of survivor memoirs because this young girl, at such a young age, was a hero over and over, in so many incredible situations, it was almost unbelievable. BUT would someone write a memoir like this if it were not true? I don't think so. The author shares what life was like in Poland before, during and after WWII. I have struggled my whole life to come to an understanding of how people (Not just Hitler and his SS and soldiers) could be so cruel. I've yet to have even a glimmer of understanding. I do thank God that some Jews were left to share the history. For 45 years I read these stories, to honor those who died and to honor those who survived. Alicia I send you my love; I'm so happy that you were able to write this book.

I have long been obsessed with the plight of the European victims of WWII. Until I read this book, I knew little of the plight of those who escaped the confines of the concentration camps. I now know that there were hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Jews who experienced terrible deprivation, and constant fear, extraordinary courage and, for many, death. It is beyond me how they survived at all. But to hear this story of a young woman and her years of strength, compassion and undying sense of "right", putting herself in the place of caring for and literally saving others, most of whom she had never previously known, is both heart-rending and inspiring. Great read. Fours stars only because there were places where typos were disruptive, and lack of good proofreading is a personal pet peeve.

Excellent read if you are a lover of American history. Each synopsis covers enough of each person to give you an idea of who and what these men were. It even gives enough detail to give you and idea of how they and their families suffered during the Revolution. It is somewhat of a difficult read because it's written in the style of the 19th century. However, to me, that was even better because it came from a period much closer to our founding. After the biographies were ended the book contained excellent information about the Declaration of Independence in the appendix. The appendix was as interesting as the biographies, if not more so. The appendix covers all the reasons our forefathers perceived as slights against the colonies. I only wish I had read this when I was in high school.

The book is old [1848] and new scholarship has increased our understanding of several that are only reported rather thinly here.The footnotes of both the biographies, the declaration and the constitution are far more interesting, some may find the legal notes regarding the constitution as it was interpreted then to be of far more interest [such as congress having sole power regarding naturalization] than the nominal biographies that leave so much more to be desired.I'd argue the book is a place to begin for those starting on a quest about our founders, than being a compendium of answers.

When I ordered this, I didn't realize it was written in the mid 1800's. Within minutes of reading, it became obvious. However, the prose and language style was curiously refreshing. In many ways I found the unique style to be more illustrative of what the author was trying to say. In many cases a point was made using far more words than today's writing style would use, but I enjoyed the older descriptions better. The perspectives are clearly based in the values of the time, but I wish we shared more of those sentiments today.

Does a decent job getting you started learning about the Signer's lives well enough, but sure wish the active table of contents was organized alphabetically and of course a lot more has been learned about these individuals the past 170 odd years than can be adequately covered in just a couple of hundred pages. Bottom line - an ok opening to some interesting subject matters...

This book used to be taught in the public schools until the late 1920s when it disappeared out of the Public School curriculum. It shares the biographies of all the Signers of the Declaration of Independence and shows their personal sacrifices, even some losing their lives for the cause of Liberty. This is a very different, non-politically correct, but true book of the real American History, not the Media rewrites you hear today. This should be required reading for every child in the United States. It is full of true dramatic stories of what our Signers suffered during the American Revolution and how they lost their homes, their fortunes, their families and even themselves. GREAT READ!!

What a wonderful summary of how our country was formed and the great men who pledged their fortunes, lives and sacred honor. I wish we would have studied this in depth when I was in school.

This is a great book, if you want to really understand the founding of this great country. The war continued much after the surrender at Yorktown. And the building of this nation a long hard struggle by some brilliant men, to finally design a government. I love American history and never realized how this nation was conceived.

An interesting read for serious history buffs. It tells a descriptive story of our country's beginnings through the eyes of those who created the history of our new nation as well as a highly detailed understanding of the breech between Britain and the Colonies over generations of time before the political rupture of our two separate nations. If you are a true lover of history this is a book you won't find easy to put down. Well done!

Excellent book, even with a few errors. This is a good reference book for people interested in conspiracy theories. There were a few errors. The author said the social security administration ordered 200million rounds of ammo, actually the administration ordered 475,000 rounds of ammo. It was the entire DHS that ordered the 200 million rounds. The other mistake I saw was the authors chapter on voter suppression. Voter ID laws are meant to prevent fraud. I work in a store where you need a photo ID to pick up an item, even small items like pens or notebooks. Other than that, I liked this book and will order another one for an Xmas gift for a relative.

Seems like a well written, & good general explanation!You can see the Author went through lots of Data to put this together.

Great book, so many new things I learned! But darn it Nick, you've got to quit scaring me with all this gruesome info! (LOL)
