I was stunned and astounded by Nelson Denis’enthralling book, “ War Against All Puerto Ricans: Revolution and Terror in America’s Colony.” This book documents a "secret history" of Puerto Rico that is not taught in our schools - not in the US, and definitely not in Puerto Rico. Yet these events did happen, and they are presented this meticulously researched book with nearly 100 pages of footnotes as well as many intriguing photos of that epoch. Remarkably, even some of the footnotes are shocking. The author is a lawyer and the extensive research confirms that. The United States is on trial here. The evidence is clear, convincing, and deeply organized. Hundreds of FBI documents provide the most shameful proof of all. By the end of the book, the entire US government has been placed on the witness stand, cross-examined, and found guilty of stealing an entire island. But the deepest impression from this book is the way Denis told an electrifying story. The attempted assassination of Pres. Harry Truman, the Ponce Massacre, the Revolution of 1950, the Gunfight at Salon Boricua, the prison torture of Albizu Campos... all of these tableaus unfolded like a series of dramatic, high-action movie scenes. I could see these scenes playing, right in front of my eyes. My mind reeling as if I were in a time machine being transported to colonial Puerto Rico. This book would make one hell of a movie. It is based on a history that has never been told. There are 8 million Puerto Ricans and over 55 million Latinos that would eat it up. I could see Benicio Del Toro or Marc Anthony in the role leading role of Don Pedro Albizu Campos. Consider this an open letter to any smart and successful movie producer out there… The next great historical and socio-politically relevant moneymaking story has been tailor-made for you… And what and amazing movie it would make!

This is sharply written, well-documented, and UNKNOWN history. I wasn't aware that all this happened in Puerto Rico! The book reminds me of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, and Gulag Archipelago...it reads like a police blotter, with the entire island as a crime scene.A lot of people are going to re-set their moral compass, and re-think their views about "Puerto Rican history" when they read this book.Bombing two towns in broad daylight...arresting 3,000 Puerto Ricans...jailing and torturing hundreds of them...killing and maiming over 200 of them on Palm Sunday...keeping secret FBI files on over ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND Puerto Ricans...arresting anyone who owned a Puerto Rican flag, or sang the national anthem...This stuff is incredible! Yet it all happened, right under our noses, in broad daylight. What a strange thing for the USA, the "leader of the free world," to do this to an entire island - with millions of people on it.I have to salute WAR AGAINST ALL PUERTO RICANS, for bringing it out into the open.

My husband and I were in San Juan a few weeks ago looking for a dinner site. We'd previously enjoyed eating at St. Germain Bistro on the first floor of this address (Calle Sol 156) and decided to try the rooftop bar. We trooped up the stairway to the top floor, only to be told it was reserved for a private party, but we could have tapas on the second floor. THANK GOODNESS that we settled for mojitos and tapas at the balcony on the second floor! There were photos of Albizu Campos on the wall and a blurb about the building's history in the menu. "It's that guy again," we said. We'd been to Ponce the previous week and learned about the massacre (but never did get inside the Massacre Museum -- it was always closed despite advertised hours saying it was open) and our Ponce AirBnB host had told us we should learn about Albizu. The Ponce historical museum mentioned him frequently, but the signage was in Spanish so we didn't quite catch the significance of the story. So there we were, sitting in Albizu's apartment, looking out of his balcony. I was inspired to order this book, which arrived as we returned home from our trip. It was chilling to read that he looked down from the same balcony to see an arsenal of US guns pointed at him. That same intersection was blocked off for the seige of his apartment ... READ THIS BOOK. And if you can, go visit the apartment. Now that we know his story, the next time we visit this apartment we'll toast an amazing man who "pulled himself up by his bootstraps" to excel at Harvard and do his shining best for his people.Update Sept 27 2017: my relatives in San Juan are entreating us on the mainland to send help ... Hurricane Maria has devastated the island full of fellow U.S. citizens ... if you are or know a lineman who can help restore power please help!

This book is so sweet and such a good reminder that time should never be taken for granted as it will pass by so quickly. It reminds kids (and parents) that time spent together is so special. I love this book!!

I bought this book as a gift but after reading it, I decided not to make it a gift. The pictures are lovely but the message/storyline is a bit muddled and does not become clear until the end. In my opinion, this is not a "bedtime" book as it will need some explaining.

Sarah Jacoby has created the most powerful picture book of the year! I have bought multiple copies and gifted them! The feelings and thoughts that this little masterpiece will evoke will make it your favorite, too! An enduring classic, for sure!

Each page is a masterpiece.

Loved the beautiful art work and beautiful, poetic lanuguage. Forces kids to use their imagination to make infrences about the story.

It was okay.

Simply beautiful which means even the older kids get something out of it. The poetry is also gorgeous if spare for such a thought provoking topic. Reminds me of Owl Moon. The art has such a fun style — every page pops like the cover. Enjoy!

Beautiful book! Wonderful illustrations! LOVE it!

Offered some good advice but I got to the end and thought, "is this IT?" I think that the Kindle version had some serious format problems as I kept seeing what I perceived as "slices of pie" shapes that undoubtedly had text or meaning to them, but did not show properly in Kindle. I think I got through the content of the book in about 10 minutes and felt like I had obviously missed something important due to format issues.Review edited May 27, 2016I am amending my review to five stars - with an asterisk! Per the dialogue below, Robin stepped in and sent me the paperback version, which is FANTASTIC!!! Based on the type of content for this book, pass GO, skip the Kindle version and move directly to the paperback which is beautifully laid out and is the perfect length with spot-on content. Can't wait to read this on the way down to The Chuck tonight. Thank you Robin!!!

This book has some really great information for this planning to move to the Charleston, SC area. I really appreciated the information on how to decide where you want to live. I glad I purchased it.

Potentially moving to Charleston in a few months and really appreciated the background. In everything I read - no one mentioned flood insurance! It would be nice to include sections on diversity, specifically LGBTQ living. Coming from a big, inclusive city, this would be helpful! The other piece I feel I'm missing is the book seems to be hyperlinked, but I didn't get a live version so I can't get those addresses? Did my book not come with that option?

I purchased the book as a gift. I'm sure it had great information, but I was expecting more substantial info (substance) based on the price. I should have checked the size of the book as it looked puny next to the other gift books I purchased.

Good Info and there really aren't any other books on this subject. BUT.... It should be half the price, how is it $25.00 for a soft and thin sized book!?

The information appeared good, but it was a small, small book. Not worth twenty bucks in my opinion. We ended up sending it back.

Amazing book, spot on advice and even my husband enjoyed it. Very well written and informative. Highly recommended.

There is no solid info for renters (and not much for singles). The neighborhood descriptions are pretty helpful though. .

The Road Taken: How to Dream, Plan, and Live Your Family Adventure Abroad, by Michelle Damiani

Review

"The Road Taken is a lovely blend of practicality and magic. It also struck me as applicable not only for building-an-adventure-abroad life but also finding-adventure-where-you-are life.""Part memoir, part travel guide, The Road Taken highlights inspiring stories of families slow-traveling the world with children. Michelle Damiani makes globe-trotting with kids, an unimaginable prospect for most, seem entirely feasible, opening the door for families to dream up their journey of a lifetime, and then actually take it.""I hope the book inspires others to venture out, and especially to give their children opportunities to truly engage with other cultures and to learn other languages, enrichments that will affect them for the rest of their lives. Who knows: I may just slip a copy of The Road Taken under my son and daughter-in-law's tree this Christmas. Their children will thank me many years hence.""Thinking of taking your family to live in a foreign country? But what about money, work, careers, school, friends, pets? The Road Taken will jumpstart your dream, leading you through the whys and hows, with questions and checklists and, best of all, stories by the author and many other families who have taken their own unique journeys of a lifetime."

While in Italy, Michelle used the time that her children were in Italian public schools to write a blog about their experiences. Once back in Charlottesville, she transformed the blog into a book, Il Bel Centro: a Year in the Beautiful Center. Her daily life in Umbria later inspired her novel, Santa Lucia. Written in sweeping telenovela style, and packed with drama, Santa Lucia is nonetheless grounded in the green heart of Italy. When not writing, doing therapy, or relaxing with her family, she can be found experimenting in the kitchen or tucked away with a travel memoir, dreaming of once again hitting the open road. I enjoyed reading Michelle's backstory about the move to Spello as much as I enjoyed the stories of all of the contributors. Many were mind boggling! I never imagined the possibility of living on a boat with your children while sailing to different countries or of long term traveling with your children in a motor home. This book will open your mind about what is achievable and it will inspire you with how travel can strengthen family bonds and family understanding of the world.

I was prepared to like the book because I am familiar with the authir’s previous works, but I was surprised by how much it really sparked curiosity in my own family. We have always loved to travel, but have been intimidated at the prospect of actually living in another country. Michelle’s book makes that dream so attainable. So a great read, but also so inspirational which is a word I always use sparingly. Not this time- it is such a great book!!

This is a book for families looking for adventure. The author and her family left the U.S. to live in a small town in Italy for one year. So she knows what she is writing about. Many people dream of living with their family in a foreign country for a while, or forever, and they all wonder, How they can we do this? What about school? Work? Money? Language? Health insurance? This book jumps into all issues, complications, planning, and joys of attempting the impossible. The book is not just a “how to” manual, although it does give lists and discussions of about every issue you’d need to consider. It is a collection of stories told by parents who took their kids out of their regular life (in America and other countries) and put them in very different situations—some lived in one place, some moved around, some kids went to local schools, some to private schools, some were “worldschooled.” The stories, including the author’s, show how each family’s adventure is unique, their choices individual, and that there is no one-size-fits-all recommendation or experience. Even if you are just pondering a life abroad with your family, and even if you aren’t, this book is invaluable resource and just a plain good read. You may want to star packing your bags.

Very enjoyable ... made me wish I’d moved abroad when my kids were younger, but really put some ideas in my head about retirement! There are lots of stories from families who moved abroad to many different countries. I especially enjoyed learning how folks resolved issues they encountered as well as the shared moments that made their move memorable.Michele Damiani provides her own stories, bringing me back to her wonderful year in Spello with her family.I thoroughly enjoyed The Road Taken and recommend it to anyone thinking of moving abroad or just armchair dreaming...

The Road Taken is a wonderful “how to” book to make traveling dreams come true. Theauthor based her advice on living in Italy and found numerous contributors who with their children relocated overseas. It was a diverse group of people, Americans, Canadians, Brits. Some were nomads on the move continuously while others settled in one location. The common thread was they all traveled with children. No one sugar coated his/her advice but all seemed like ordinary people who chose extraordinary adventures. The book was laid out in an organized manner from saving for the trip initially to reacclimating to the home country at the end. Special focus was placed on making the trip as meaningful to the children as it was for adults. Ms. Damiani’s background as a school psychologist created a unique perspective for acclimating children in a foreign environment. Each topic began with Michelle’s personal experience followed by others’ stories and suggestions. Many of the contributors are bloggers so entries were well written and informative.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever considered exploring other cultures. It is an uplifting book that makes the reader want to pack up the kids, pets and passports and hit the road

Full disclosure: I am going to dive head first into anything Michelle Damiani writes. Even though I am not going anywhere soon, travel is in my blood, and I love stories of it, hers, mine, and yours. Probably like anyone who has followed the author's family, I am especially interested in hearing about their experiences. But it was a great idea to expand the scope of adventures to include those of other families who were also undertaking lengthy sojourns. I hope this book inspires others to venture out, and especially to give their children opportunities to truly engage with other cultures and to learn other languages. Who knows: I may just slip a copy of this book under my son and daughter-in-law's Christmas tree --- just to plant a seed.- Priscilla Kingsley

As a seasoned corporate expat, I was so inspired by families that planned and then picked up and moved on their own!!! I enjoyed reading how different families approached their journey. Some stayed in one place, those really adventurous ones country hopped. Other families world-schooled, others registered in local schools. There were honest stories of the difficulties in the choice to move abroad, but nobody said that they wished they had not made the move.Great combination of practical logistical advice (especially the medical advice), advice from a professional counselor on the psychological aspects of moving as well as some truly wonderful personal stories.I would recommend this book to anyone considering moving abroad. If I have one bit that I did not personally enjoy, it would be some of small paragraphs from a few of the contributors at the end of each chapter, some of their blurbs just did not add anything to the big picture for me (this is the reason for 4 not 5 stars).

I'll skip any summary of this book or of the series; dozens of reviewers have done that quite well. I assume that you are familiar with these books, probably have read this volume, (likely more than once), but now wish to have the book available as an audio CD. Perhaps a long car trip is in the offing? Good for you.I am happy to report that, at least for me, this audio version gets high marks across the board.First, I can hear it and understand it. No mushy sound recording. No odd imbalance in volume that requires you to keep turning the volume up and then down. All of the spoken words are crisp and clear.Second, there are no sound effects or such folderol.Third, there is a single reader. This is not a play for voices and is not read by a number of different character actors.Fourth, Alex Jennings is a marvelously effective reader. His approach is dynamic but not overly dramatic. He is never coy or arch, and does not ham up any of the big scenes. In the first chapters he can be a bit tentative in distinguishing among the major characters and is inclined to give short shrift to minor characters, but after that he settles into the various roles and adds a distinct and recognizable identity to each character. Finally, the reading is very respectful. By that I mean the book is not read as though it were just some silly children's book. It is treated as the triumphant work that it is and this adds greatly to its weight and impact. Please note that there are 7 discs. Runtime is a bit under nine hours.

†††When I read The Dark Is Rising in 4th grade (it's a 9th grade book) IT WAS THE MOST EXCITING THING I HAD EVER EXPERIENCED. It's so full of beautiful expressions of the battle between good and evil. I think it made me aware of the battle, the two clear sides, even as an adult and like the hero in the story - gave me an unquenchable desire to overcome the darkness in the heart of mankind and in my own heart. Such is the powerful effect books have on children, if not adults. Is there a special child in your life? This and the C.S. Lewis series, The Lion Witch and the Wardrobe, will be important references in his or her spirit. So buy it :-)

Series is awesome, and should be read by anyone interested in the folklore of the British Isles region. The stories themselves earn 6 stars. But this particular version is very disappointing and not worth more than one star. I thought this was a set of books, when in reality it is one single book, containing all of the stories back-to-back. I guess it's more lightweight and portable this way, but the books almost becomes unmanageable in its large size, especially for kids. Pages are rather grey as well, not bright, and appear to be from recycled paper product.I'm all for recycling, but save it for newsprint or packaging... not for works of literature that are intended to be read before bedtime!

I will dispense with any sort of summary of the story; dozens of reviewers have done that quite well. By that I mean the book is not read as though it were just some silly children's book. It is treated as the triumphant work that it is and this adds greatly to its weight and impact. Please note that by "6 pages" the publisher actually means "6 discs". Runtime is a bit over seven hours.Enjoy.

Back off Harry Potter! Here are the original muggles and their wizardry old Great Uncle Merry! Set out on an adventure that rivals any of Indiana Jones and Lara Croft! Choose a side- the dark or the light.I had forgotten the excitement and fu of Susan Cooper's Dark Is Rising series! These stories transcend time, fitting into the world of today just as well as they did when first written. Before reading the modern stories of wizards and such, I recommend introducing your children to the world of the Drew children, their Great Uncle Merry and the Old Ones.

This has been, and always will be, one of my favorite novels. I read this for the first time when I was seven and I was immediately pulled into the world and characters. The Dark is Rising is actually even better than this novel, but this one is a great setup to the sequel. It has a 'Goonies' type feel to it as these children move to this new house that all sorts of secrets hidden within its walls. They find a treasure map and begin to hunt for what is marked in the map. It has some great clue hunting scenes and run-ins with 'darkness' that keeps the suspense going throughout the entire novel. I feel like this series should be read by every young kid because it instilled a sense of wonder in me. If you are a fan of the Book of Three, you'll like this series.

Excellent nearly forgotten series of books. If you saw the movie made about the second book, forget the movie. It was awful compared to the book. The characters are wonderful, the story line is gripping and Susan Cooper has created an amazing world of wonder! Predating Harry Potter by decades, this is the book series that everyone needs to read!

How to describe Andrew Carnegie? Certainly he would have to be one of the most fortunate individuals to have ever been born. Son of a hardscrabble weaver from a small hamlet near Edinburgh, Scotland, Carnegie and family immigrated to Pennsylvania whan he was a young man. Perhaps never before in history, has a particular man, with certain skills, found himself at the right place, at the right time and under the right circumstances as did Andrew Carnegie in 19th century western Pennsylvania.Despite having no formal education, Carnegie was certainly a very intelligent man. He educated himself over the years to the extent that he was considered a very philosophical author and sought after speaker on many of the issues of the day. He hitched his wagon to the right horse when he became assistant to an up and comer in the Pennsylvania Railroad. From an early age, Carnegie discovered the beauty of dividends and compound interest, money earned not by virtue of labor, but solely by virtue of having money. Due in large part to his connections, he was able to parley inside information into increasingly lucrative investments, to the point that he was soon able to turn over daily operation of his several businesses to very able lieutenants while he enjoyed the good life. These lieutenants, assisted by a series of unique events and developing technologies, made Carnegie the richest man in the world. While it may sound as if Carnegie was merely an observer and accumulator, he certainly deserves much credit for his success. He was an early pioneer in the concept of cost accounting and through a ruthless system of unit cost reduction, both in the areas of vertical integration and labor cost, was able to successfully grow his business and survive numerous economic downturns which bankrupted his competitors. Many decry Carnegie's business practices, most notably in the areas of labor/manangement relations and anti-competitive practices. However, this demonstrates a very common failing in many commentators; holding historical personages to current standards. The same people that condemn Carnegie's labor practices, denigrate George Washington for owning slaves, or Harry Truman for making racist comments. Each of these, though immoral by current standards, were men of their times.Owners of manufacturing entities were expected to battle with labor. Labor, in the mid-late 19th century was heavily connected with the burgeoning socialist movement which was looked upon with disfavor by much of society. In fact, it is no coincidence that those of Carnegie's competitors whose labor forces became organized, were largely those that failed in the repeated economic panics of the day. Carnegie succeeded, and grew, as a result of reinvesting profits and maintaining low unit cost. Ironically, though his Homestead steel works became the symbol for labor/management violence, he considered himself one of the most enlightened managers of the day.Carnegie is viewed, with Rockefeller, Morgan and Vanderbilt in the class of "Robber Barons" which sprang up during the era, however, Carnegie is vastly different than each of these individuals. While many of his contemporaries benefited and suceeded largely due to watered stock and market manipulation, he was very proud, and quick to point out that he never operated a corporation and never sold a share of stock. He was definitely NOT a monopolist (U.S. Steel was formed as a result of his sale of Carnegie Steel to J. P. Morgan and investors). He was simply a supreme capitalist and the first of his type and scale. He is condemned by others for taking advantage of political and business connections not available to others. Again, that was common practice in the era. Many things that he did, while legislated against now, were perfectly legal and accepted business practices of the times. All that having been said, I get the impression, especially in the later parts of the book, that Carnegie could be an insufferable prig. I imagine it becomes easy to view ones self as omnipotent and all wise, when everything one touches turns to gold and one is constantly praised for his good works. However, it is telling that he constantly bragged of being successful while only working 2-3 hours/day, lecturing his many employees to enjoy leisure time, while at the same time instituting a 12 hour/7 day a week work schedule. It seems almost unbelievable that he was unaware of the hypocrisy of some of actions, but after reading the book, I actually believe that he was. By letting his managers do the dirty work of making his money, he was able to "keep his hands clean" and disavow any unpleasantness that might result.Though hopelessly naive, it is difficult to condemn a man who literally pioneered the concept of philanthropy and spent his last decade in a never flagging crusade for world peace. He tirelessly advocated the formation of a League of Nations/United Nations style world arbitration body, with military enforcement powers, well before any of his contemporaries. While he would doubtless be overjoyed to learn of the existence of the current United Nations, he would nonetheless be less than pleased with its corruption and lack of effective authority. All in all, a rather good treatment, not just of Carnegie, but of the period itself and many of the historical figures of the era. At times, the book dragged and became tiresome, but not exceedingly so. I would highly recommend the book for anyone interested not just in Andrew Carnegie but in late 19th century American and British history.

It was very interesting to learn about Andrew Carnegie. He did a lot of good with the fortune that was made during his lifetime. There is still good that is being done because of it. I did not like the fact that he worked the labors so hard and did not let them have a good life while he was playing so much. But as the book says that was how business owner thought and treated labors at that time in history.I felt the book could have been a little more condensed.

While Mr. Nasaw writes with authority and verve, and has done considerable research that indicates he knows his subject, it is also apparent he doesn't much like Mr Carnegie. He uses numerous unnecessarily disparaging adjectives in describing his subject that got tiresome. He makes judgments that, unless he is a psychologist, seemed to me to be leaps of conjecture about Carnegie's motives driven by his assessment of Carnegie's presumed psychological make-up. While he occasionally tries to show some objectivity by giving Carnegie a benefit of doubt, generally he portrays his subject with too much of his personal disdain for his subject. He is certainly free to do this as the author, but I personally prefer a more measured approach to biography.

The book is lengthy, if nothing else. The biography is also well researched, but the author almost makes it seem like he wants to drop the hint of just how much research he did. If name-dropping had a research-amount equivalent, this author definitely does it. Still a good read though and highly recommended.

801 pages of biography. This is what David Nasaw has produced--a massive biography of Andrew Carnegie. Well known as a philanthropist, he gave away much of his fortune. For instance, one accounting notes the following (page 801): ". . .at the time of his death, Carnegie had given away more than $350 million (in the tens of billions today). There remained but $20 million of stocks and bonds. . . . In the seventh paragraph of his last will and testament, Carnegie directed that it be bequeathed, in its entirety, to the Carnegie Corporation. And with this he accomplished the final, and to his mind, the most important goal he had set himself." In essence, he had given his entire fortune away. This book provides cradle to grave coverage of Carnegie, beginning with his origins in Scotland. Early on, the family moved to the United States, settling in the Pittsburgh area. Carnegie's first job was in a cotton mill when he was thirteen. He was close to his mother then and throughout his life. He quickly moved to a position as a messenger with a telegraph company and then, in a stroke of fortune, become a telegraph operator in a company. Here, he began an association at a young age with Thomas Scott and J. Edgar Thomson of the Pennsylvania Railroad. By 17, he was working for the Pennsylvania Railroad and on his way.The volume notes his small stature (barely five feet tall), but by 24, he was superintendent of the Pittsburgh Division of the rail company. Early on, he began to develop "rules for business" (e.g., see page 76). He was in a position to get involved over time with an oil company, with bridge building, with rail, coal, a bank, a grain elevator. And, of course, with iron and then steel. As he became successful, he and his mother enjoyed visiting the old family home in Scotland, Dunfermline. He married quite late in life (after 50), but appears to have had a happy marriage; he also became a father later in life and appears to have done well in that role. By that time, he had withdrawn some from day to day running of his endeavors and spent much more time in New York and abroad than in Pittsburgh. The book illustrates the ambitions of Carnegie to be more than an industrial baron. He wrote books, he hobnobbed with political leaders, authors, and scientists. He strove to be recognized as more than a wealthy individual. Nonetheless, he was a hard businessman. At one point, he took pride in developing "win-win" tactics with his employees; by the time of the Homestead strike, he had obviously moved in a different direction, as he supported a touch, hard-nosed attack on unions and employees.Among his goals developed in the latter part of the 19th Century--to give away his rapidly developing fortune. He donated for development of libraries, he created an organization devoted to peace, he funded an organization aimed at advancing the sciences, he provided support for faculty and students at colleges, he endowed the Carnegie Corporation, he supported music, and so on.In the end, this book, although very long, is well written, so that the pages fly by. Nasaw does a fair job portraying Carnegie, warts and all. He notes his tough stance against his own workers (after earlier having been praised as a friend of labor), his sometimes ostentatious efforts to become known as a man of letters, his desire to give world leaders a piece of his mind (irritating people like Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson in the process). In the end, despite his diminutive stature, he was a giant in American history.

Did you know that there was a patriotic comic book hero that predated Captain America? Did you know that this hero is the reason Timely Comics chose to switch from his triangular flag-oriented shield to the now-iconic discus shield? That hero is, aptly enough, The Shield, and Rik Offenberger covers him and his pals quite well in this reference book, which includes a few public-domain stories of some of the heroes that started in what we now know as Archie Comics. The majority of the book is great reference material and interviews with some of the surviving writers and artists behind the creation and continuation of the Mighty Crusaders.

Also contains reprints of Black Hood from Top Notch Comics 19 Sep 41; Steel Sterling from Zip Comics 1 Feb 40; The Web from Zip Comics 27 Jul 42; Shield from Pep Comics 30 Aug 42; and Hangman from Pep Comics 17 Jul 41. Otherwise. the history covers the Golden Age to today (2016).

Very neat that it includes some Golden Age MLJ material. Pretty good coverage of the 1940s material. Not nearly enough pages on the 1950s Jaguar and Fly era. The 1960s coverage is essentially a slam piece, so if you enjoyed the over-the-top comedy era you may well feel insulted that the book is essentially from the perspective of non-fans who don't get it. Nice coverage of the 1980s revival era shepherded by Rich Buckler. Good coverage of the Impact! era. Far too many pages spent on stuff that never got published and fawning over god awful "grim and gritty" 90s style "reimaginings" of classic characters that were already "imagined" just fine, thank you. Way too many pages on the craptastic "Dark Circle" wherein the writers and artists desperately want to be taken seriously, which unfortunately means no joy or whimsy can ever be seen in the comics anymore.

it was everything i expected , the only problem was the delivery was about a week late from i it said it would be delivered

If nothing else, this impressively in-depth compendium proves the resilience of the MLJ/Archie Comics characters. Reprints of the 1940s comics are the real prize here, with stories featuring the Black Hood, Steel Sterling, the Shield & Dusty, the Web and the Hangman (in his big debut, bringing justice to the men who murdered his superhero brother, the Comet) making it a collectors' item, Those hoping for a detailed analysis/history of the remarkable number of revivals from World War II to the present day will not be disappointed, either. It's a big, thick book that has all the details chronicling the many incarnations of the heroes who banded together to form the popular super-team called the Mighty Crusaders. Pages from Joe Simon and Jack Kirby's Kirby's first issues of "The Fly" and their take on The Shield, "The Double Life of Private Strong," from 1959 are presented as examples of what would become the Mighty Comics line, even though they occurred in the pre-Red Circle/Blue Ribbon/Archie Adventure Comics time frame, In fact, the only missing connection between the '40s and the '50s/'60s eras is a mention of the dramatic impact Jack Kirby had on Irv Novick when they both worked together on "Shield Wizard" #7. Suddenly, Novick (who went on to be one of the best Batman artists) was panel-busting with the best of them. The late '50s/early '60scomics were as good as many DC titles of the time, while the mid-'60s presented an approach to storytelling that seemed as if it was lifted from the "Batman" TV series. Helmed by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel, these wacky books have their partisans and, while I'm not one of them, there is something about the "Too Many Superheroes" issue of The Mighty Crusaders that makes it a one-of-a-kind hoot. DC had the characters for two runs, under the Impact logo in 1991 and the Red Circle imprint in 2009, although the latter consisted of a few titles scripted by J. Michael Straczynski, with only the Shield comics, continued by Eric Trautmann, reaching a tenth issue. Reprints of the '40s comics, now in public domain, have made the dream of owning these rare comics a low-cost reality. Yes, they retain the flaws of the originals (occasionally poor color registration, for example), but I never thought I'd own a complete collection of Bob Fugi's run on "The Hangman" or Novick's best work on the Shield, for example, let alone "King" Kirby's guest-art issue of Shield-Wizard #7. (These can be found by looking up publisher Kari Therrian and the title of the comic book.) It must be said that no one brought more class to the line than Rich Buckler and his crew, whose Blue Ribbon/Red Circle/Archie Adventure Comics run was the most consistent in quality. For example, Steve Ditko was drawing "The Fly" at one point, "The Fox" was by Alex Toth and the Black Hood topped them with the great work of Gray Morrow. Otherwise, one can only wonder what might have been if Straczynski's interpretations of the MLJ characters had lasted, but, as all too often happened, they were here and then they were gone. For now, we have the excellent crime thriller-oriented "Black Hood" and Dean Haspiel's quirky take on "The Fox" from Dark Circle Comics. More importantly, we have the MLJ Companion, a remarkable work composed of comprehensive reference material.

AWESOME!

FROM: The Bookwatch: January 2017The Comix/Graphic Novel ShelfJames A. Cox, Editor-in-ChiefDiane Donovan, EditorMidwest Book ReviewThe MLJ Companion is a complete history of Archie Comics' "Mighty Crusaders" super-hero series, and provides an in-depth consideration of each of the characters and their histories. As such, it's especially recommended for prior enthusiasts who want more depth and detail about the superheroes and their creation and adventures. Nearly three hundred pages pack in adventures, creator interviews, full-color good-sized cover art and comic panels, and more, offering notes on different editions, artist profiles, insights on character continuity and evolution, and more. The result is a fine 'must' for any comics and graphic novel collection in general and Mighty Crusaders enthusiasts in particular.

A very interesting, heavily illustrated overview of the history of the MLJ superheros in all their incarnations. While I would have preferred a volume focusing more on the golden age, when the characters were at the height of their success, I understand the need to cover later eras to appeal to a broader audience. Well written and reasonably priced; very happy to add this to my library.
