From the Back Cover

Freedman shares his best baseball stories from a state whose season is short but there's no shortage of future major leaguers passing through-some 300 in the past thirty summers. Read about: The annual Midnight Sun Game that starts without lights at 10:30pm. An Alaska League team so eager to get in a game on a soggy day that is sets the playing field on fire. The legendary radio announcer who exits mid-game, inviting a bystander to continue the play by play. The bullpen that sneaks off to a local tavern for a few beers - during the game! But, hey! This is no joke. Mark McGwire, Dave Kingman, and Dave Winfield (all pitching then) donned uniforms of teams such as the Fairbanks Goldpanners, Alaska Glacier Pilots, Peninsula Oilers, Valley Green Giants, Mat-Su Miners, North Pole Nicks, and Anchorage Bucs. Other Alaska League alumni: Hall-of-Fame pitcher Tom Seaver and fireball hurler Randy Johnson. And don't overlook H.A. "Red" Boucher, "the George Washington of Alaska baseball," and others who shaped baseball history in the north.

Before the Cape Cod League came to fame, the place for college baseball players to hone their skills in the summer was the Alaska Baseball League. Over 300 Major League Baseball players spent a season or more in the ABL, including guys like Tom Seaver, Dave Winfield and Mark McGwire. The ABL was the place to play, and the teams and the games were terrific.Lew Freedman's book captures part of that glory, from the start of the Fairbanks Goldpanners under Red Boucher in 1960 through the 2000 season. The ups, downs, stars, feuds, heroes and villains; Freedman does a good job and brings an informed perspective to a great story. The ABL was more or less "discovered" on the 100th anniversary of the Midnight Sun Game back in 2006, when Sports Illustrated, ESPN and others came up to cover the game. The great story wasn't 100 years of games played from 10:30 PM to 1:00 AM without artificial lights; the big story was the amazing success across the decades of the ABL. But Freedman was there first.Barry Bonds, Randy Johnson, three generations of Boones, Jason Giambi, John Olerud, Rich Aurilia; the list of former ABL players is long and distinguished. Kudos to Lew Freedman and Epicenter Press for telling the story well.

Lew Freedman wrote one of the better books in baseball history as he traces the history of Alaskan baseball (bush league in its finest form) from the territorial days to the turn of the century. What make this book so interesting is that it also spotlights on many of the players who used to played in Alaska during its short summer seasons who later on became big time Major League players like Mark McGwire, Dave Kingman and Randy Johnson. But overall, the main focus of the book remains on baseball in Alaska, the history of the teams, players and coaches along with some of it more eccentric fans. It may be that some of the players we see in Anchorage today during the summer season, may be a future Hall of Famer. The book comes highly recommended for anyone interested in baseball history or enjoyed baseball in general.

Lots of pictures and stories

This is a very good book about different teams in the Alaska Baseball League. In talks about each team and their players and also talks of the history of the league.

The book is intense and you can't just read it casually, way too much information. Meyer leaves no doubt and I mean *no doubt*, he does a remarkable job showing a layman why the cell is proof of a Designer and he knows his stuff.

I do this book review as a nonscientist. Therefore, my qualifications to offer opinions on the quality of the book and its arguments might be deemed dubious. Nevertheless, I will offer my views, and when it comes to the quality of this book, the coherence of the arguments, and the monumental expertise in the sciences that is demonstrated, I give the book very high marks. The arguments in favor of the need to postulate some form of intelligence as the progenitor of life on Earth seem to me quite convincing. Even with an awesomely vast universe, with much in the way of probabilistic resources, I believe that Dr. Meyer makes a very strong case for the view that some form of creative intelligence giving rise to life is certainly the best, if not the only reasonable, explanation for life as we encounter it here on Earth.I believe that this book deserves to be in every university library, and that it belongs in many science and philosophy classrooms as required reading material. Dr. Meyer has certainly made belief in the existence of a creative Intelligence as the source of life in this universe and the progenitor of “laws of biology” not only more credible, but almost persuasively convincing. “Signature in the Cell” is an excellent book.

Stephen C. Meyer (born 1958) is a Senior Fellow of the Discovery Institute and Director of its Center for Science and Culture; he has also written Darwin's Doubt: The Explosive Origin of Animal Life and the Case for Intelligent Design. He wrote in the Prologue of this 2009 book, “the Dover trial and its associated media coverage made me aware that I needed to make my argument in a more prominent way. Many evolutionary biologists had acknowledged that they could not explain the origin of the first life… In 2005, when I was repeatedly placed in the position of defending the theory of intelligent design in the media, the argument that I most wanted to make in its favor had little public standing. I have written this book to remedy that deficiency… [This book] does not just make an argument; it also tells a story, a mystery story and the story of my engagement with it.” (Pg. 6, 8) Later, he adds, “This book examines the many successive attempts that have been made to resolve this enigma---the DNA engine---and will itself propose a solution.” (Pg . 32)He observes, “The interdependence of proteins and nucleic acids raises many obvious ‘chicken and egg’ dilemmas… The cell needs proteins to process and express the information in DNA in order to build proteins. But the construction of DNA molecules… also requires proteins. So which came first, the chicken (nucleic acids) or the egg (proteins)? If proteins must have arisen first, then how did they do so, since al extant cells construct proteins from the assembly instructions in DNA. How did either arise without the other?... scientists investigating the origin of life must now explain the origin of at least three key features of life. First, they must explain the origin of the system for storing and encoding digital information in the cell… Second, they must explain the origin of the large amount of specified complexity or functionally specified information in DNA. Third, they must explain the origin of … the functional interdependence of parts---of the cell’s information processing system.” (Pg. 134-135)He acknowledges, “Anyone can claim that a fantastically improbable event might have occurred by chance. Chance, in that sense, if always a possible explanation. But it doesn’t follow that chance necessarily constitutes the best explanation. And… I wanted to find the BEST explanation for the origins of biological information. When I realized that I did not need to absolutely DISPROVE the chance hypothesis in order to make an objective determination about its merits, clarity came. By assessing the probability of an event in light of the available probabilistic resources, I could determine whether it was more reasonable to affirm or to reject the chance hypothesis for that event… I concluded that chance was not a terribly promising candidate for ‘best explanation’ of the DNA enigma.” (Pg. 222-223)He notes, “When I first learned about Prigogine and Nicolis’s theory and the analogies by which they justified it, it did seem plausible. But as I considered the merits of their proposal, I discovered that it had an obvious defect, one that the prominent information theorist Hubert Yockey described to me in an interview in 1986. Yockey pointed out that Prigogine and Nicolis invoked external self-organizational forces to explain the origin of ORDER in living systems. But, as Yockey noted, what needs explaining in biological systems is not order (in the sense of a symmetrical or repeating pattern), but information, the kind of SPECIFIED digital information found in software, written languages, and DNA.” (Pg. 255)He recounts, “in the spring of 2000, I had just written an article about DNA and the origin of life… When the letters to the editor came in, I initially blanched when I saw one from a fierce critic names Kenneth R. Miller… Miller claimed that my critique of attempts to explain the origin of biological information had failed to address the ‘RNA first’ hypothesis… Miller was half right… But I knew that two decades of research on this topic had not solved the problem of the origin of biological information… I had decided not to address this issue in my original article. But now Miller’s letter gave me a chance to do so.” (Pg. 296-297)He points out, “Every major origin-of-life scenario… failed to explain the origin of specified information. Thus, ironically origin-of-life research itself confirms that undirected chemical processes do no produce large amounts of specified information starting from purely physical or chemical antecedents. For this reason, it seemed entirely sensible to think that the conservation laws that computer scientists had devised to describe the flow of information in computational domains applied equally to the larger domain of nature itself. If so, it seemed plausible to think that the informational repositories of life… were pointing to a source of information beyond the realm of physics and chemistry.” (Pg. 332-333)He states, “Though advocates of intelligent design have been labeled by some of their opponents as creationists… the case for intelligent design depends, ironically, upon a form of scientific reasoning---namely, uniformitarian reasoning---that creationists have often bitterly opposed. Indeed, the case for intelligent design depends on the uniformitarian method of scientific reasoning that Darwin himself used in formulating his argument … I concluded that a rigorous scientific argument for intelligent design could be formulated.” (Pg. 347-348)He suggests, “I have found that the scientists and philosophers who reject [intelligent design] typically do so on philosophical grounds.” (Pg. 375) He admits, “Of course, critics of intelligent design may still judge that the number of published books and articles supporting the theory does not yet make it sufficiently mainstream to warrant teaching students about it. Perhaps. But that is a judgment about educational policy distinct from deciding the scientific status, or… the merits of the theory of intelligent design itself… If there were a hard-and-fast numerical standard … no new theory could ever achieve scientific status… Logically, the issue of peer review is a red herring---a distracting procedural side issue.” (Pg. 412-413)He asks, “Does a reference to an unobservable entity provide a good reason for defining a theory as unscientific?... The answer to that question depends… upon how science is defined. If scientists (and all other relevant parties) decide to define science as an enterprise in which scientists can posit only observable entities in their theories, then clearly the theory of intelligent design would not qualify as a scientific theory Advocates of intelligent design infer, rather than directly observe, the designing intelligence for the digital information in DNA. But … this definition of science would render many other scientific theories, including many evolutionary theories of biological origins, unscientific by definition as well.” (Pg. 423-424)He admits, “As a Christian, I’ve never made any secret about my belief in God or even why I think theism makes more sense of the totality of human experience than any other worldview… the theory does not make claims about a deity, nor can it. It makes a more modest claim… about the kind of cause---namely, an intelligent cause---that was responsible for the origin of biological form and information.” (Pg. 440) Later, he adds, “there is no question that many advocates of … intelligent design do have religious interests and beliefs and that some are motivated by their beliefs. I personally think that the evidence of design in biology… strengthens the case for theism and, thus, my personal belief in God. Subjectively, as a Christian theist, I find this implication of intelligent design ‘intellectually satisfying.’” (Pg. 447)He concludes, “In some [cosmological] models, it’s even more probable that a whole universe like ours spontaneously fluctuated into existence than it is that our universe with its extraordinarily improbable initial conditions evolved into an orderly and lawlike way over billions of years. This means that the many-worlds-in-one hypothesis generates an absurdity. It implies that … our memories and perceptions are … quite possibly chance fabrications of quantum fields… the proposal … renders all scientific reasoning and explanation unreliable… It would be hard to invent a more self-refuting hypothesis than that?” (Pg. 508)This book is a substantial addition to the literature about Intelligent Design, and will be of great interest to those [whether ‘pro’ or ‘con’] studying the theory.

I'm not a Christian and I certainly don't believe in "creation science" which is often confused with intelligent design. I have spent my life studying science, and all of my degrees are in scientific and medical areas, but I've always been interested in spirituality. It's unfortunate that so many scientists are atheists. Perhaps they have no choice in the matter since they are generally wed to the very narrow perspectives of their scientific specialties. (Others, like Richard Dawkins, are wed to the industry of Atheism.) The Signature in the cell was the first book that I have read that explains in no uncertain terms why the genetic code would be impossible for nature to create by randomly combining primordial molecules. It is a technical book filled with technical facts and statistics that is so interesting that you forget that you are actually learning something. Although it doesn't talk about God or any form of religion or spiritual world, it is difficult to avoid the obvious conclusion that something outside of our material universe had something to do with the very first reproducing organism as well as multiple steps along the way to the evolution of the human species. (Myer himself does not draw any inferences about anything outside of the material universe. He simply draws the conclusion that an intelligent designer is the simplest, and for all practical purposes, the only explanation for the rise of life from a lifeless world.)If you have studied quantum mechanics, you will have run into the inescapable conclusion that nothing really exists an a determinate state unless it is observed by a conscious observer. Furthermore, you probably have run into Bell's theorem which concludes that locality is something of a myth and that there is no logical connection between the reality we live in every day and quantum reality upon which our material world is based. The theory of quantum mechanics frankly states that consciousness is (and probably was) a primordial property of the universe. The theory of intelligent design is based upon SCIENCE, and not on theology. It stands upon infinitely firmer ground than the Multiverse which is modern cosmology's latest mathematical/theological attempt to explain the anthropomorphic nature of our world of matter. Read this book if you really want to begin the journey to a rational understanding of how Spirit might actually have a place to live after all!P.S. I've read the one star reviews. It is obvious that none of these reviewers has actually read the book. Out of 429 reviews, only 58 gave it two stars or less, and their comments seemed to have nothing to do with the book's actual content.

Excellent work of history research. Not for light reading. However, I read it word for work and was mesmerized. So many of the original records have been lost over the centuries, but enough still remains that a detailed analysis of the personalities involved reveals the obvious vengeful intent of certain individuals. However, in an era when belief in superstition was obviously stronger than in actual religion (my statement, not the author's), it is hard to separate conscious malicious intent from willful self-serving psychological misperception. It is well to remember that the public backlash was severe, and Puritanism per se did not long survive 1692.

Books about the Salem Witch Trials are legion, and continue to fascinate. Now historian and author Marilynne Roach has taken a new approach by studying and presenting the cases of three of the accused and three of their accusers. It opens withintroductions, based upon the limited documentation available, of Rebecca Nurse, Bridget Bishop, Mary English, all accused of witchcraft, and Ann Putnam Sr., Tituba, and Mary Warren, who were heavily involved in making accusations. The detail that the author has compiled helps to make these women seem real. The second section is an account, month by month, of the hearings and trials, with comprehensive and often verbatim descriptions of the testimony of all involved. Initially, this is fascinating, but as the trials grind on, much of the information involves the dramatic “fits” of the girls supposed to have been bewitched, and their reactions to the suspects. Necessarily, many other individuals, in addition to the eponymous six, enter into the action. Soon these accounts become monotonous in their astonishing similarity, prompting the reader to wonder how the distinguished and “learned” judges allowed themselves to be taken in for eight months. More interesting are the vignettes in which the author imagines what the six might have been thinking at the various steps along the way to the convictions and deaths. Tales of how relatives worked to exonerate their women, coupled with depictions of the hangings, are heartbreaking. The book’s final section deals with the aftermath, when colonial authorities put a stop to the proceedings, shocked at how many were being accused (over 200 men and women) and executed. Once they stopped the admission of spectral evidence, the wind was taken out of the sails of the entire hysterical happening. A complete listing of documentary evidence, with volumes and page numbers, is provided for each chapter. A series of schematic maps is also included.Although it does lag in sections, Six Women of Salem is well worth reading for students, historians, and anyone interested in the terrible year of 1692 and the witchcraft phenomenon in its American particulars.

Marilynne Roach's story of early colonial life in Massachusetts paints a scene that appears medieval -- this was America before the age of Franklin and Jefferson. Immigrants from England brought traditions of folk magic and superstition that fed into an atmosphere where people believed not only in the supernatural, but in their own ability to control others -- or be controlled -- by direct contact with the devil. Even supposed methods of counteracting evil powers through folk rituals were seen as participating in the dark side of the supernatural realm. Common personality conflicts, jealousies, and Puritan fear of damnation -- combined with a raw environment and threats from the French and their Native American allies -- all played roles in making Massachusetts a harsh place for English colonists, who were easily convinced that witchcraft was yet another curse.Witchcraft-like practices, and suspicions concerning them, grew quickly in the space of about a year to dominate life in and around Salem. The hysteria fed on itself with help from at least one minister and a number of families and individuals who believed themselves to be "afflicted" by the evil powers of witches. One curious aspect of the accusations was their frequent reference to "spectral evidence": the afflicted would often claim to see the accused in ghostlike form tormenting the innocent. One need not be a pure-science devotee to dismiss such claims. The Bible itself warns against the ability of the spirit of evil to deceive and assume disguises, and Jesus of course would surely be pissed about the self-righteous condemnations that his followers here imposed on their neighbors.Spectral evidence was at least questionable as legal proof of witchcraft, and its eventually complete rejection by the law was pivotal in the final undoing of the witch-hunt madness. As the accusations and trials reached further and further toward the end of 1692, public support eroded. Wisdom finally resurfaced, helped in part by the threat of libel suits on behalf of the accused. It still remains a mystery to me how so many individuals in a community could have been so deeply crazed -- superstition, folk magic, and the sinful extremism of some who claim to be "religious" somehow fall short of fully explaining it. In recent years it has been suggested that ergot, a fungus that may have grown in the rye flour commonly used, creates a hallucinogenic toxin that could have played a part. Ms. Roach is skeptical of the ergot explanation; in her view it would have affected the whole population and not only certain individuals. I'd like to see more scientific information on that -- as with many ailments, could some individuals be better suited to resist a factor such as toxic exposure?Six Women of Salem is a well-told story of this tragedy, and shows a wealth of research on the personal stories of both the accused and the afflicted. It conveys a sense of living right in the moment when the action takes place -- such that this reader could imagine how, in that environment, one might observe odd events, and lacking other explanations might suspect witchcraft. There is one section about a third of the way through the story that seems overly burdened with details of accusations and whose specter is afflicting whom -- those who seek the fullest possible discussion of the facts may want to read every word, but after a while I just glossed over that part.Beyond mere history, one can appreciate the great personal agony of the accused and their families. The ending gives an overview of how some of the accusers sought forgiveness from their victims, and various families eventually reconciled.

Marilyn K. Roach has really done her homework on the Salem Witch Trials. She has picked women who were victims from different backgrounds, as well as women who were among the accusers. I have read other reviews who did not like the format, but I love the throw back to a little historical fiction story of each woman before getting into the details of the research on their lives. Very interesting. Definitely worth the read.

As an author who lived on Majorca for one winter in 1956 and wrote a book about it, I saw the Monastery where George Sand and Chopin lived and had read the earlier edition of the George Sand book. I am pleased with this one with its helpful footnotes and illustrations..Especially nice is the cover painting of Sand which I think is one of the best any artist did of her. My order was quickly filled.Robert F. Burgess

This must not be missed by anyone interested in this episode in the relationship between Chopin and George Sand. Chopin is hardly ever mentioned, but it is an enthralling account of the encounter between an unconventional family unit from wealthy and chic Paris, and the simplicity and suspicion of the native Majorcans. They hated Sand for not attending Mass and living with a sick man who was not her husband, and she returned the compliment. Sand's romanticised view of a simple life in the country certainly soured on her. She claims they cheated her and over charged for every single item. (What's new? She was a tourist). One has to use one's imagination to conjure up the presence of Chopin in the background, but he is there, coughing mutedly. The Majorcans also had a morbid horror of Chopin's illness. And they were right - it was Tuberculosis - infectious and fatal - but George herself merely regarded it as a malaise. There is an interesting addition by Robert Graves, who also lived on Majorca many years later, and who came to the rescue of the sullied reputation of the Islanders. It is a most interesting social history, played out by two of the most significant people of the time.

Other reviews have focused on how negative George Sand was about her experience in Majorca, but that completely ignores her beautiful writing and the historical content of the book. Yes, she complains, but it seems that there was a lot to complain about. It may have been more of a personal journal, where your goal is not to entertain, but to record your thoughts and experiences. Just mowing through her paragraph-long sentences is delightful!

I found this book disappointing, because I expected it to be about the relationship between George Sand and Frederic Chopin while in Majorca. However, this book has absolutely nothing to do with either Sand or Chopin. This book is entirely made up of George Sand describing the scenery, people, and foods of Majorca, and just complaining about how she hated it there. And to make it worse, there are footnotes on every page saying that Sand was totally wrong about everything she was saying. I would not recommend this book to anyone, unless they wanted to read up on what Majorca was like during the 1800's.

Boring book.

The perfect read for my trip to Spain!

The product has followed my requirements, shipping was in time. After a wonderful week in Majorca I really lasted this book. Unfortunately there is no Hungarian translation. On the other hand its a good opportunity to develope/maintain my english :)

Brilliant and sad at the same time, especially if you've walked in her footsteps in Valdemossa, Mallorca (Spain)

Dr. Henry Cloud nails it in this book. "Integrity" is a must read immediately following the "The power of the other." This one-two combination will shake you to your core. If you can be introspective and honest with yourself, these books will change your life and that of those you lead and love. As a bonus, "Integrity" is the best diet book I have ever read. I lost 15 pounds in a month by having the courage to face my reality. Thank you, Dr. Henry Cloud.

Dr. Cloud writes a very frank and helpful analysis of what it takes to be a person of integrity. Honesty and ethics come to mind when one thinks of integrity, but his definition is much broader. He is talking about how to be a fully integrated person in all aspects of life. At the heart of this is the ability to have a clear view of your reality. Where are you at, and what must you do to change? What can help motivate the desire to change? What are some of the best ways to help change come about? There is good discussion and counsel around all these issues. If you are tired of kidding yourself and know you need changes in your life to be more of the person you'd like to become, this will be a good book for you.

This was my fifth purchase of "Integrity." The last four were for employees who I am mentoring for supervisory positions and friends who own small businesses. I would highly recommend both the book and the principles that are taught in it.

Insightful, helpful, encouraging, and inspirational this book is. In dealing with some difficult work situations, I began to seek out information and books that could explain what makes the good leaders good and what separates the good from the bad. I found the author's discussion on the good versus bad issue challenging but helpful. I know my own yes/no good/bad thinking has often made circumstances appear more ominous or threatening than they actually were. As one of those black-and-white thinkers, I was tempted to be immediately dismissive and defensive when it came to this part in Cloud's book. But I read through it, reflected on it, and truly believe it will come to help me work through my work situations. I took extensive notes in this book and will read through them time and again. If you think Integrity only deals with morals, you might want to take a look at this book. Integrity is so much broader in scope than I ever would have known. One of my dad's favorite quotes is, "Life is a long journey with a heavy burden." Well, learning truths about yourself and coming to appreciate your authentic strengths (and weaknesses, too!) can do much to lighten the load! It's never too late to learn!

The missing ingredient that takes you from just the talented and successful to greatness is Integrity. Something that is sadly missing in the 21st century at lots of levels. We would do well to heed the advice of Dr. Cloud. Evaluate yourself. See if you meet the standard and if not, re-direct your life and actions. A great read and very inspiring.

Integrity is a term I hear used only infrequently. When it is used, it is often used in so many different ways that determining what it really means becomes difficult, if not impossible. Whether or not you agree with Cloud's take on integrity, the points he makes and the illustrations he uses will give you plenty to think about.Focusing on integrity as a kind of courage is brilliant. It explains both the need for integrity, and gives a basic principles for practicing integrity that apply to everyone, no matter what kind of work or life a person may lead. His basic premise could be summed up by saying that if you don't face the real world, the real world will kick your rear. This book had a profound impact on how I understood myself, the business world, politics, and several other aspects of my life. Importantly, it identified why otherwise intelligent, reasonable, and successful people can make incredibly bad decisions in certain circumstances. If you want to avoid making the same mistakes over and over again, Integrity is a great place to start.

Most books on leadership focus on the process and functions of leadership. That is good but incomplete. Some newer books focus on the character of leaders, especially on emotional intelligence and morality issues. That too is good but Henry Cloud takes the issues of character and leadership to a whole new level. He unpacks the issue of character and makes us realize that this is really the core of leadership, not just getting things done. As a leadership consultant and trainer, I now have a new set of tools that I can bring into what I am teaching, observing, and helping to construct. I recommend this highly and require it for all those I counsel on leadership development.

great book. lot's of thought provoking content. a client of mine learned about "empathy". This revelation may revolutionize his leadership.

Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

I’m really reviewing the whole series here, because, if you’ve looking at the third book, you’re already hooked. This is where the writing started to get sloppy.First let me stress that I enjoyed the story very much. It’s fairly predictable and formulaic, but the protagonist is engaging and relatable, as are many of the supporting characters. I don’t absolutely need originality if the story is good, and it is. I’m not sorry I read them.But. The writing - the wordcraft - is not worthy of the story. I don’t know if they accidentally published the kindle editions before final editing, or what, but the text desperately needs a thesaurus and an English teacher with a red pen. There are relatively few grammatical errors - not enough to complain about - but there are SO MANY wasted words. The author never, ever, EVER writes, “They walked over the hill,” if he can write, “The young man and the slender, wiry girl were quietly moving forward, step by slow step, quietly making their slow way to the top of the nearby hill that needed to be climbed, so that they could then descend into the quiet valley to be found on the other side.”The excessive passive voice, endlessly repeated adjectives and adverbs, and just ridiculously profligate use of words and more words, seriously interfered with the story. And I used derivatives of “quiet” in that example advisedly - this is clearly the authors favorite descriptor. Everyone, everywhere, says everything quietly, or in a quiet voice. They do not murmur, or mutter, or breathe, or gasp, or speak under their breath or sotto voce. (Ok, they do do some of these, but nowhere NEAR as much as they speak quietly.) In book four, which was the worst in this respect, “quietly” appears 285 times, with an additional 69 uses of “quiet.” “Loudly” appears twice.I’m apparently pickier than most about the actual syntax of the stories I read, given how many glowing reviews I’ve seen for authors who barely seem literate. Thus my criticisms may be irrelevant to many of you. If you’ve never had an issue with poor wordcraft, please ignore this review. The story is good. Some of the female characters are pretty one-dimensional - and wimpy - but Kitai makes up for that, and the antagonists are an interesting bunch. I am not sorry I purchased them, but I’m not sure I’ll be able read them again, and I re-read almost everything.

Jim Butcher is brilliant. I’ve read the entire Dresden Files series, more than once! I’m reading The Codex Alera series for the 2nd or 3rd time. It still blows my mind how unique the plot line is. The books are filled with amazing plot twists. I am 41, so I can recommend this series to adults, but I’ve also suggested the series to my 9 year old daughter, therefore I would highly recommend this series to boys and girls 9+ years old. Thank you Jim Butcher. I look forward to more of your work.

This is the third book in Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series, and I get the feeling that this is where the story really gets rolling. We learn more about two of the principal political players in the realm, and we learn more about young Tavi's back-story. We also get a taste for what's going on in the larger world.I think what I really liked about this one, however, was seeing Tavi in action. Yes, we got some of that in the first two books, but here is where I think we really see him come into his own. You see, Tavi has never developed his "fury" powers, which are basically a magical mastery of the various elements (fire, earth, water, air, metal, plants, etc.). In that, he's kind of a powerless freak in an unkind world, but he's also a very intelligent powerless freak. So here, we finally get to see him use his intelligence to not only overcome his lack of furycrafting, but to outwit and outmaneuver those with much greater abilities. The book also has some major revelations about both the past and future of the realm. The First Lord is old and without an heir, and this book finally opened up the door on some new possibilities of what is going to happen when the old man finally dies. It left us with a teaser, bordering on a cliffhanger, that has made me eager to get to the next one.

Good, good, good book. Tavi is growing up, and his mysterious past, and why he has no furies is finally revealed.Things that are really good:1. Maximus2. Maximus3. Grown-up Ehren4. Kitai5. Tavi as a legionnaire captainoh wait, .5. The Freaking Canim. Finally Tavi's got some worthy adversaries and while treachery is always afoot in the Kingdom of Alera, this time, there's far more open conflict. Butcher continues to write really well and put his characters through legitimately believable emotional turmoil and growth in a completely fantastic setting filled with awesome imagery and novel twists on epic action. There's nothing not to like about this book, and the way Butcher puts it together makes you feel rewarded for sticking with the series. Questions about key characters' dubious past lives are revealed and the political intrigue gets far thicker and stickier. A perfect example of how one can write really awesome adventure fiction and still be incredibly intelligent. I can't help but compare this series to the Ender series. And every time I do, I think, Butcher wins. This is what Ender should have been after the first book. Card's geopolitical fantasies are an unrealistic shadow compared to the world of Alera. On to the next one.

Riley Edwards is back at it again with the men of the Next Generation. To say I didn’t fall in love with everything that is Jason and Mercy is a complete understatement. This book just had it all...Heartache...(seriously the ending of Chasing Honor had me very nervous about how Jason’s book was going to play out but damn...it was everything)Hopelessness...Strengthen...Faith....Love...Family...Suspense...The list could go on and on...At the end of the day it’s all about family! Jason was lost in his own head and it took Mercy to help him find the light and lose the guilt that was set within him (with also a little help from Jasper). With Jason and Mercy working together on a case the attraction that was always hanging in the background comes to a head. Will they be both be able to let each other in?There is nothing I love more than a book that not only has an Alpha Male in it but a strong female who can handle her own. Finding Mercy, had me from page one and I devoured each page there after. Jason and Mercy’s story was sexy, beautiful, and heartwarming. I fell in love with everyone all over again!!! I absolutely love The Next Generation books and would recommend them to anyone and everyone!!!• Review By Chasing The Words Book Blog

There is so much emotion in this book, it was overwhelming, breathtaking and beautiful wrapped all in one. This story will break your heart and put it back together and have you believing in love, the all-consuming soul to soul connection that is undeniable and unbreakable. There is so much in this book it is one heck of a rollercoaster ride. From despair, self-loathing, resentment, longing and hopelessness to strength, forgiveness, faith, love, understanding, and family, as well as danger, suspense and romance, this book has it all in spades. It will keep you on the edge of your chair, holding your breath. The characters are fantastic and the storyline well-written and engaging. There is an intensity that holds strong throughout the entire read and though many parts are emotional there are also plenty of laughs, smiles, fun times, family interaction and romance to balance it out. I loved every minute of this book. It is a page turner from start to finish.*I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily providing my honest review.

Finding Mercy was the third book in the Next Generation series, all read in three days! I loved the first two books! I was emotionally invested in the characters and embraced the struggles and events on a personal level!I had no real connection to Mercy and Jason! I liked Mercy very much and was already invested in the whole tight knit family/clan! It was also great to have appearances by Ethan, Honor and Carson as well as Nick and Meadow! Unfortunately, Jason and Mercy never pulled me into their lives! The romance and suspense should have been exciting but wasn't. I was never invested in the story! Really just a formulatic cutout checking all the boxes without me feeling anything! I wanted to love it, but it was just okay! I'm sure other readers probably enjoyed the book. I was disappointed! This my fifth Riley Edwards novel and the first to leave me flat. I think she's a terrific writer, but Finding Mercy lacked her usual magic!

Omg where do I begin with this Amazing book? First off kuddles to Riley for writing one heck of a book and absolutely loved the storyline and characters in this book. Jason has been in limbo for 2 years and now he finds he needs to let go over his past with the ghost in his past but when he is partnered up with mercy can they keep the attraction buried or will it come to head ?My favorite quote in the book is“Do you hear that?”Loud laughter rang out through the house. “Um?”“I’d forgotten. But thank God, you reminded me.”FamilyHaving a family isn't something mercy doesn't know how to deal with it all. This book really had alot of emotions and steamy sex scenes and just loved it.

Feels like I have been waiting forever for Mercy and Jason. I love Mercy, she is the opposite of a doormat. No BS with her and I loved it. Jason has the self torture down. But he didn't play around either and was straight forward too. Great back and forth for these two. For a few twists and turns to help round them out. And Jasper....sigh..he's my favorite and he is definitely seen in Jason. Can not wait for the next few stories from this crew.

Another beautifully and heart wrenching book. It is so sad when someone guilt's themselves into no truly living. Thank you Ms. Edwards for sharing your gift of writing by telling us all of these books about love, both lost, renewed, and newly found. I do wish your editor did their job better. I understand that all of the to's, the's, of's, and such add to the word count; but would that be such a bad thing? Also please check the meaning of words.

"Mercy Mercy Mercy, you make me loose my mind."And loose my mind, my heart, my soul to this book I did. Riley Edwards is brilliant! Two people who lost those close to them coming together to create off the charts emotions, passion and heartache. One of them lost in their guilt of loosing someone, the other overcoming their emotions of loss to become a better person with their life. All with some drama and steamy love thrown in. Once I started I couldn't put this book down till I was done. Congrats Riley!! Another excellent book!

There is just something about Jason and Mercy that pulls at your heart. The characters are so well written that they feel like family. You cheer them on when things are going brilliantly, cry when they get hurt and even threaten to take to them with a shovel when they are being dumba#$%$! Wait maybe that last one is just me.Another fantastic book in the Next Generation series.
