Bought this to read with my 9 year old. I am an avid reader and have studied literature, but this prose is occasionally difficult to get through. I couldn't imagine him being able to read it himself, and he is pretty good. It is just about perfect for my use - we unschool, so as we get to terms, phrases, ideas, and historical info that isn't familiar, we delve into impromptu 'lessons' about the Crusades, Medieval times, caste systems, religion and politics' dance through history, and so on. I love the spattering of the original old English poetry and stories at the beginning of the chapters, and the sourcing is great. It is interesting and lively, fun to read, and spurs all sorts of creative activities, sparring, and other lessons. A great book for igniting creativity and building research skills off of. Depending on your child's ability to grasp words and ideas in loose context and reading level, might be good for older kids, definitely for teens, and great for adults.

Four hundred year old adventure stories thrilling as ever! My 9-yr old daughters and I enjoyed every page "because it was so exciting"! Our favorite part was when Maid Marian and the beautiful Bettris kicked major butt, with bows and arrows and a frypan, unaided by anybody all on their own.

Very happy with the layout of this book and the drawings every few pages. I was happy to purchase the unabridged version with pictures!! My eleven year old son had a very enjoyable read, and shared this book with friends.

Excellent read, well written, very funny version, I've read a few, and no mention of bad King John, definitely the bad sheriff of Nottingham, and three excellent archers by play on names of famous people Ingle noted for her time. I recommend this book. Great read for children as well. Short to read for adult. Longer read for children depending on reading skills.

This electronic version of the Puffin classic worked great for me to follow along with a class. Page numbering is exactly the same. And of course, the stories are wonderful. A unique aspect of this book is that each chapter can stand alone for class readings if you don't want to use the whole thing in a unit on the Medieval times and culture.

I bought this book to read with my 7 year old, and I am pretty well pleased with it. The vocabulary is simple, the sentences are short (and often start with the word "and"; my grade school teachers would be appalled), but the tale is told effectively and accessibly for young readers.Also, unlike some other books for young readers (e.g. the Droon series), this book does not simplify to the point of eliminating all of the descriptive passages. When Robin disguises himself as a musician, he wears "feathers of many colors" and carries a harp. There's not enough description to interfere with the pace for impatient children, but there is enough detail to hang your imagination off of.As for the story, there were some frustrating omissions. The origin of Robin Hood is given only a few paragraphs in the introduction, and the tales of how Will Scarlet and Friar Tuck joined the band are missing. The book only tells how Little John joined. The rest just sort of show up later in the story. I'm sure that was done to keep the pace of the story moving, but it would have been good to have more of the stories written in this same style.The rest of the story is a reasonably solid narration of the traditional tale of Robin Hood, with no more than the usual level of variation. I definitely recommend this book as a good way to introduce children to the story of Robin Hood, though I like the Dover Children's Thrift Classics edition slightly better.

A wonderful classic and a pretty book to display on the shelf. My kids, 7 and 11, really enjoyed us reading this as a family.

While the story is fun and exciting, the sentence structure in the book is very disappointing. I recognize that it may be the author's style to add emphasis to ideas by writing them as stand-alone sentences, even if they are fragments. However, the children who are reading this book are usually also just learning how to write a good sentence; so the basic rule that a sentence should be a complete thought is more important in books for early readers than in books written for older audiences.I was also frustrated because it would have been so easy for the author to write her thoughts in complete sentences. Many fragments could easily have been written as the second half of a compound sentence.Some examples from page 6:"The lad agreed. And he beat the man. Fair and square.""But the man was angry. And embarrassed.""Like most outlaws, he stole. But only from the rich."

I watch Flea Market Flip all the time and I’m really fond of the idea of re-imagining furniture with paint and other media. So, when I happened upon this book – all about painting old furniture to redo it - I snatched it up.The cover picture does not appeal to me, but I figured it was just a piece for a child’s room and that the rest of the projects would grab me. Well…now that I’ve had a chance to read it, I’m not 100% thrilled. It’s a nice idea and there’s a very thorough section on various paint/other techniques, but the makeover section is disappointingly short. Speaking of the makeover section…I suspect that the author’s style and mine just don’t coincide, because I found a lot of the projects rather ugly afterwards, particularly the little desk that was turned into a weird orange color with white distressing brushed over it. I know that I like painted furniture because I have seen beautiful, inspiring pieces online before (which even inspired me to paint my own dresser), but nothing in this book was particularly inspiring to me (aside from a few pieces I thought were alright). It’s really too bad, as I was hoping for more.Overall, whether or not I can recommend this really depends on your personal style. Some people out there may love the author’s style, and if so, then you’ll likely love this book. I suggest you try to look inside the book before buying if you can, just to see if it’s up your alley.

Probably the best book I've seen but still slightly lacking in detail. Definitely for the very beginner level, just dipping their toe into the furniture rehab world. Not much to offer anyone with experience, so keep that in mind.

I purchased this book to update some old furniture that was left behind at our house when we bought it. Since we moved from an apartment to a house we didn't have a lot of furniture to fill the space, so I wanted to update and modernize what we had. This book goes into detail on how to take your existing pieces and update them to amazing one of a kind items. They go over in detail how to strip, prime, stencil, paint and even replace the hardware to change the look of your furniture. I turned a hallway table into a printer desk and it only took me an entire day to sand, prime, paint and add new hardware. I love how it turned out and get so many compliments on it. Even if you're not "crafty" this book teaches you ways to transform your furniture no matter what your skill level. Don't be intimidated by DIY crafts!

I'm a pinterester and I still found this book very helpful. The author does a great job illustrating step by step instructions (with pictures) on how to DIY old pieces of furniture into new ones within a short time. Although most of this stuff can be found on Pinterest but what this book does is provide everything you need to know about furniture makeover in one central place. That way you don't have to weed through all the noise on Pinterest to get to where you need to be. I would recommend this book to people who are on a limited budget and don't mind investing time in budget shopping to find furniture pieces they can easily turnaround with the right tools.

I just started refinishing my own furniture and was looking for a how to book with ideas for different looks and techniques. This book is PERFECT. Lots of pictures, excellent explanations that are easy to follow. There is a guide on the different tools and products used and what to look for in buying furniture to refinish. For every technique she shows she gives a list at the beginning to show what materials are needed. It has everything I was looking for and it's easy to follow as well. I would recommend this to anyone starting out or thinking of renovating furniture or anyone who is looking for new ideas and techniques to use.

I needed a furniture recovery book for a christmas gift. Originally, I was going to go with the furniture bible, but the price was really high for my budget. I decided to go with this one instead and I was not disappointed. The front and back are very pretty and presentable and there are beautiful pictures within it as well. The first part of the book goes over various furniture repair techniques and the later half focuses on before and afters to give you the inspiration you need to actually go through with your project. I was very pleased with the quality of this book, and my giftee was thrilled as well.

This book is well written, with lots of recipes. It is great for anyone who loves ice cream and cold desserts. That being said, I tried a couple of the ice cream recipes but my husband was not impressed, he liked many of the recipes I found online for free better.Its a good book but if you look online you will find many recipes that are just as good if not better, it all depends on what you like.

I ordered this book along with my ice cream machine. After all, who doesn't love Ben & Jerry's? I had bought the pint containers from the grocery store as a special treat; now I can make my favorite flavors at home.I started out by making the French vanilla. It was good and creamy. I also have made coffee, peach, butter pecan, last night made chocolate, and am looking forward to making my favorite, coffee Heath bar crunch. All have worked out well. The butter pecan is the best butter pecan I've ever tasted, by far.The recipes are extremely easy — no cooking, no pre-chilling in an ice bath, no separating whites and yolks of eggs — all processes I've found in other ice cream books. It's surprisingly easy for the product you get.Many of the classic Ben & Jerry recipes, such as Cherry Garcia, are found here.What will I try next? There are some great looking cantaloupes at the fruit stand and that recipe intrigues me.I'd recommend this book to all ice cream makers, from the novice to the connoisseur.

Ok, this book is awesome and worthy of the hype. I've made several of the recipes using our Breville ice cream maker, and they're all excellent and relatively very easy / fast to make.That said, we also bought two other books -- "The Perfect Scoop" and "Sweet Cream and Sugar Cones." The recipes in those books call for a different type of "base," in which you heat the cream, use egg yolks (instead of entire eggs or no eggs), etc. In turn, that type of base leads to a creamier, smoother ice cream. So, when I have the time, I make the base from one of the other books, while using the "flavoring" parts of the recipes from this book. Either way, I seriously couldn't go back to buying or eating store-bought ice cream after making the ice creams in this book.

LOVE THIS BOOK! It is great ice cream, and very easy to make. I took choc, strawberry and vanilla to a party, and every one love it, and why not? It is Ben and Jerry. Hello :) I end up giving the left overs away. I even make ice cream for my dogs, but I used coconut milk and cream instead of milk and heavy cream in the French Vanilla recipe. Next time I will try use agave instead of sugar. I try the coconut ice cream and it was great. I am lactose intolerant, so will work for me too. I used one can each of coconut milk and coconut cream. Buy it you will love it!

I love B&J's the company and ice cream and I love this book--it's filled with great recipes (yes, old favorites, including Cherry Garcia) and B&J's origin story at the beginning is fun to read and even, I might say, conveys some good life lessons. What kept me from giving the book five stars is this: The recipes for Sweet Cream Bases 1, 2, and 3 (found on pages 28 - 29) are incomplete. More specifically, recipes 1 and 3 seem to be missing instructions for the cooking portion of the process. I came to this conclusion because recipe 2 says, "This simple recipe is made with a minimum of ingredients and requires no cooking." Okay, got it--and the implication that recipes 1 and 3 DO require cooking. The problem is that neither of those recipes provides instructions for cooking. Both of them end with whisking and blending ingredients. Shouldn't recipes 1 and 3 end with instructions along the lines of, "Pour mixture into a sauce pan and cook..."???? Maybe everyone else knows how to cook ice cream, but this book was the only "textbook" I got with my first ice cream maker, and I surely don't know what to do after whisking and blending if cooking is required for these recipes before chilling and then churning.

I have never made ice cream before I bought this book. The recipes are SO easy, so basic, a beginner would have no problem making these recipes. If you like Ben & Jerry's ice cream, you will be very happy to know that these recipes taste exactly like the store-bought ice cream. The hot fudge recipe is the MOST delicious, amazing hot fudge I have ever had, and it takes no corn syrup. They even include little stories about Ben, Jerry, and their brand. It's adorable and I love this book.

The recipes in this cook book are easy to follow, even if you have zero cooking experience. You just need an ice cream maker and access to a good grocery store with a lot of variety to acquire some of the ingredients – this is great if you are looking for something other than your usual vanilla / chocolate or plain ice cream recipes.

I've been using some of the basics now several time and love my ice cream. I am new to home made ice cream. I so much missed hazelnut ice cream which started my journey. After some you tube videos on it and this book with the basic foundation, I made the best hazelnut ice cream I've ever had and that is a big deal to me. So, thanks for this book. Lots more to explore but got to be careful not to gain weight eating all this wonderful home made ice cream, a dangerous path.

This book has been my go-to for favorite standard flavors and is a good launching point for my personal, inspired flavor creations. I have the Cuisinart Compressor Ice Cream Maker which works perfectly. I looked at a bunch of recipe books, even bought a few, but honestly stick with Ben & Jerry's. I use totally free-range, organic eggs and have had no problems with bacteria. Happy, healthy hens produce better tasting, safer eggs. I keep looking for the eggs in a carton that are pasteurized in a way that doesn't make them useless for ice cream, but I can't find them where I live. I guess I will try the cooked custard-type of ice cream but it's such a lot of trouble compared to Ben & Jerry's recipes. Bottom line is this is a great book for your ice cream making efforts. My son loves these books. They got my reluctant reader to devour books.

Love the Zack Zombie -Pixel Kid series of Minecraft stories more than any other out there. They are fun, hilarious, and carry a gentle social message about how to handle certain situations in life. They have a lot of heart.

My sons are OBSESSED with Minecraft. This was an enjoyable book for them both. They’re 8 and 4.

My 7 year old love it. Needs a little bit of help with some of the words, but over all fun book for a minecraft lover.

I liked this but wasn't as good as the first one because of the ender Dragon cannot come out of an end portal , it's just not realistic.

The first and second was totally off the charts best books ever!Still waiting for the third book, happy reading

This lady knows what she is talking about! Beautiful pictures, detailed instructions, hard back, quality print and reasons for performing an action. Also authorized by Instant Pot! Quite unlike the 550 recipe book I returned (https://www.amazon.com/Instant-Pot-CookBook-Delicious-Instructions/product-reviews/1976102316/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_hist_1?ie=UTF8&filterByStar=one_star&reviewerType=avp_only_reviews#reviews-filter-bar).There is no reason to buy a cookbook with 550 recipes. It's simple math, once you cook a few recipes, to convert any of your preferred recipes for Instant Pot. Coco Morante (the author of this (The Essentials I.P. Cookbook) gives you all the information you need to do this and use the I.P. to it's fullest advantage. Seems like a lot of people are jumping on the I.P.'s popularity and printing books with only the numbers game as a goal. Coco did not do that. Her book supplements I.P.'s and is all you need to become proficient with your I.P. Thank you Coco

I have tried several Instant Pot cookbooks and I have found this one to have the most fullproof recipes, probably because it is “authorized by Instant Pot”, as it states on the cover. In the first pages the author, Coco Morante, tells you how to use your Instant Pot, whether using the pre-programmed or manual settings. She also has a section on how to convert recipes for the Instant Pot. Almost every recipe comes with a full page, lovely photograph of that dish, which I especially like. This book is extremely thorough and has recipes for the pantry which I find very useful. For example, did you know that you can make yogurt with your IP? I never knew that! There are recipes for mayo, broths, applesauce, caramelized onions. There are separate chapters for breakfast, beans and grains, soups and chilis, poultry, beef and pork, vegetables and side dishes, pantry, and desserts. There’s also a really good recipe for Honey Tumeric Tonic which is great if you have the cold or the flu. I like how this book has very nutritious and healthy recipes along with several different ethnic foods such as borracho beans, Korean braised beef short ribs, Jamaican-style Rice and beans, Chana Masala, and Indian Inspired Okra and Cauliflower with Cucumber Yogurt Sauce. This is my “go to” Instant Pot cookbook for sure! I have really enjoyed making several of these recipes. The recipes are easy to follow and the author details everything you need to know for your IP for each recipe. So while I’m realtively new at using my IP, I have found her recipes easy to follow and understand. Tonight I’m going to make the chicken and dumplings soup! I highly recommend this book and give it 5 stars! There are recipes sure to please every appetite in this book, from down-south comfort food recipes to unique ethnic ones! I have two other Instant Pot cookbooks (did have another, but deleted it from my Kindle because it was garbage and recipes were incomplete). This one is the best of them all. Author gives lots of information about using the Instant Pot (my current favorite appliance; saying a lot when there is a microwave oven in the room), as well as a bunch of interesting recipes. Probably the most valuable aspect of the book is the way Ms Morante helps the Instant Pot owner have the confidence to try their own recipes--either old favorites or new ideas.Highly recommended--great value.

We've tried several recipes from this book. We love the Instant Pot and I don't know how I would have used it without this book. Our favorite so far is the "Italian Wedding Soup"! Oh my! SO GOOD! And everything is just so easy. Ingredients are easy to find and when we've had to adapt (chicken bouillon, instead of broth, or bacon instead of pancetta) things have been just fine! So happy we got this as beginners in the Instant Pot revolution!Update: While we still love the Instant Pot, I'm really sad that my copy of this book is already falling apart. While it's a hard cover, the pages are just glued like a cheap paperback and now they are falling out!

Coco Morante’s ‘The Essential Instant Pot Cookbook’ contains 75 recipes for electric pressure cookers.Morante offers breakfast foods, beans and grains, soups and chilis, poultry, beef and pork, vegetables and sides, desserts, and a chapter of pantry basics such as caramelized onions and mayonnaise (not all of which use the Instant Pot).I tried a few recipes and, frankly, found some of them a bit humdrum. The peppers in my ‘Unstuffed Peppers’ turned out mushy, but the rice, beef, tomato portions were quite good. Her ‘Bone Broth’ wasn’t as well seasoned as that I found in Melissa Clark’s ‘Dinner in an Instant.’ And I find it far easier to make oatmeal, breakfast cake, and omelets the conventional way.There are things that I find pressure cookers do quite well. It’s great for beans, braising meats, soups and broths, and recipes for skinless chicken.Morante’s recipes for these are a good starting place. And strangely enough, although I don’t find that cakes are easier done in the IP, cheesecake certainly is! And do give her ‘Meyer Lemon Ricotta Cheesecake’ a try.The major problem that I have with most IP cookbooks is the timing. It takes time to build up pressure and time for it to vent. I would have found it helpful if she had given the total time that a recipe takes. The cooking time alone is misleading.

This excellent book explains both the historical development of the Tango and also the actual dance technique of the Golden Age. I have a lot of books on the Tango and this is my favorite. I have lived many years in South America and can see that the author has spent a lot of time in Argentina and understands that culture. Thus, she has a profound understanding of the Tango, which is quite rare for a foreigner.First, the book does a great job of explaining how immigration and the various cultural / social forces in Buenos Aires influenced the development of the Tango. It is not just a dry, factual history; but rather shows how important details of the dance are based the social forces at work during the time the Tango was developed.Second, the technique section focuses on how to maintain an emotional connection between the two partners throughout the dance. It explains the posture and steps from a heartfelt place rather than merely from a mechanical approach. This helps us dancers develop a smoother, more fluid style that creates a pleasing experience for both partners.Finally, one thing I especially liked about this book was that it was not highly personal. Rather than focusing on the author’s personal life or emotional needs, it was clearly focused on the Tango. This book has become my top reference book on the Tango. Five stars!

It is rare for me to find a book on any dance that really excites and interests me. This was one of those rare books. Denniston explores the history of the tango without resorting to a list of dates and figures. Instead she focuses on the grand themes of the dance's unique history and how that shaped the way the dance developed and is viewed by its devotees. She also covers the fundamental techniques of the dance without becoming dry and boring. Instead she shows how the meaning and purpose of the dance influence the technique. Overall, this is a very enjoyable book on the tango. Not an academic book, but more a devotional book with very accessible writing on the history, culture, meaning, and technique of Argentine tango.If I have any criticism of the book, it is that the author could have offered some direct quotes or experiences from the dancers she consulted for the book. She places much emphasis on the Golden Age of the tango, how the dance developed, and the meaning those dancers derived from the dance. I enjoyed the focus she placed on these Golden Age dancers throughout the book; however, I felt she could have explored it even further and made it come alive even more if she had offered some direct quotes and experiences from the dancers she talked to. Despite this, the book is an excellent overview of the history, culture, meaning, and technique of the dance, and I greatly enjoyed it!

I just received and started reading THE MEANING OF TANGO by Christine Denniston and got as far as page 53 at which point I loved the book for its cultural details (I would never have guessed that it was not unusual for women of this period to know how to lead: there were no classes for women and, if they did not learn from fathers, brothers, etc, they learned from mothers, sisters, etc. and some women were excellent leads.) but, it turns out, I was sent a defective 2007 edition which is missing the correct text for 6 pages which have, instead, been printed with duplicates of other pages that are in their correct sequence.I did not immediately realize that this was not the edition I ordered. The 2008 edition is the only edition actually on the amazon.com website but, perhaps, amazon.com is treating them as interchangeable. In any case, amazon.com has agreed to send a replacement. I am not sure what to say about the different editions.When I get further into the book, I will add more detail to this review.

Bought this for my wife when we first started taking tango lessons. Several years later, it's been passed around through nearly the entire club and quite a few other dancers have picked up copies of their own. Worth your time if you're interested in the history of tango.

The best part of this book is Part 1 in which the author covers the history of argentine tango, its step child ballroom tango and the early preparation of dancers in the Golden Age. Inexperienced leaders danced in practicas for years before an experienced leader as a kind of sponsor would invite them to a milonga. The leader's responsibility was to be so well prepared that the follower did no wrong on the dance floor. She describes the culture of courtesy to the follower in the tanda and at the milonga and the codes. This is really the heart of the book. I also liked her review of the orchestras and their musical styles which comes in the latter part of the book.In between those two sections, the book is devoted to dance technique. As a tango dancer since 1997, I do not believe tango technique can be learned from a book-the subtleties and the connection are far and away too important. If you dance argentine tango, I recommend it for your bookshelf.Wonderfully, tango is now a UNESCO World Heritage dance. If you have read this review and do not dance tango...introduce yourself to the reality of a dance like no other.
