There is not one recipe in this southern pie cookbook that I didn't like. There is something in this book for every pie lover. I considered this book an invaluable cookbook for my pie baking collection. I finally got to realize what the purpose was for the sweet little pie bird that came up in recipes every so often. After reading it I just had to run out and buy one. I have even decided to start a pie bird collection! I had thought that I was a pretty knowledgeable pie baker but upon reading this book I found out lots of helpful information that took my pies over the top. I was surprised at all of the pictures and helpful hints and at how easy it was to make the pies in it. It was beyond my expectations considering how reasonable the price was.

Absolutely beautiful book. GREAT pictures. Wonderful recipes!However.....flexibound isn't very functional. It's going to be a chore to make it stay open and not possible without blocking part of the recipes. If this had been published in spirlbound it would be PERFECT. I'm thinking of weighing it down by opening it mid-book and laying some thing flat and heavy on it to losing it up BUT I fear doing this may actually weaken the spine.Alas.......it's a beautifully put together book. Thank you.

I bought this for the would-be Southern Belle in my life. She's not much of a baker but she loves reading through it and contemplating taking the plunge. It sounds odd, but she's more of a food culturist than an actual cook so she really digs this.

This is a great cookbook if you want to learn to make delicious pies. There are several different crust recipes and a great variety of wonderful recipes for pies. I've baked one of the crust recipes and one of the pies so far and both were a success. Jan Moon is a wonderful baker, and I know that she wouldn't put a recipe in her book if it wasn't tested. I have already given two of these as gifts and they loved it. Great Christmas or birthday gift for a baker!

This is probably the most comprehensive pie cookbook I've ever owned. The recipes I've tried are true. I especially like all the recipes for different pie crusts. They are simple, yes, and they are the ones my mother and grandmother used, which makes them standard, and that's okay. Now I have them all in one place, so that I know exactly where to go. The pictures in the book are stunning-- and mouthwatering. I'd say, you won't fail by following these recipes. Just make sure you have the ingredients called for.

I have a confession to make. I consider myself an accomplished cook, but my Achilles heel in the culinary department is pie making. There's something about making a crust that makes me as nervous as can be. I bought a pie book this year, but it seemed a little past the skill level of this novice pie baker. So I decided to buy this book as an early Christmas gift to myself. I am beyond happy that I bought it!The book is a softcover with a durable cover that looks to wipe clean. My only complaint is that you need a cookbook stand to actively cook from it. It is laid out well with a wonderful cross-referenced index, and the pictures, oh the pictures! The pictures are full page for each and every pie, and they make you declare that you will master the art of pies.The book is divided as follows: pie and tart crusts; cream, meringue, and ice cream pies; tarts and galettes; slab pies; pie toppings; classic southern pies; fruit pies; cobblers and crisps; hand pies and fried pies; equipment; ingredients; and crust index. My favorite sections are the pie and tart crusts chapter as well as the crust index. The crust index is a genius two page spread that lets you choose one of the crust recipes and pair it with a suggested filling. This way, you can make a pie anytime by utilizing a crust you re comfortable making and handling. You don't have to be a pastry pro to pull off these recipes--there are a number of press in the pan crusts. I find this very reassuring. If you're a pastry pro, they show you how to make a lattice crust or do a decorative crust edge.You will find a wide array of pies, something to please everyone. There are lots of old expected classics such as vinegar pie, chess pie, and banana cream pie, but you will also find lots of awesome and welcome twists on classics such as red velvet pie, maple chess pie with brown sugar bacon, and mini bananas foster pies. The salted caramel pecan tassies are amazing and a showstopper for company. Be sure to check out the toppings chapter which will show you how to make everything from apple cider drizzle to homemade crème fraiche.I am pleased with my purchase and hope Southern Living produces more books in a similar vein. I will enjoy this book for many years to come and think it would make a nice stocking stuffer for the family member with a sweet tooth who enjoys baking.

Nice guidebook for children, but I am betting that adults will learn a thing or two as well. This would be great as a preview of a trip to the nation's capitol for children. While there is so much to see and do in Washington, DC, the author hits on the main points including the government buildings like the White House and Congress, the major memorials like Lincoln's and Jefferson's, and the wonderful museums that are part of the Smithsonian Institution like the Air and Space, and Natural History Museums. Everyone loves spending money so the section on The Bureau of Engraving and Printing is informative.We are coming up on the 150th Anniversary of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln this April, so I am glad Ford's Theater and the adjacent Petersen House where Lincoln died are included. Their exhibits are truly memorable. What would a trip to Washington, DC be like without a trip to The National Zoo with a glimpse of those adorable panda bears!I like the fact that the author provides photos and an outline of Fun Facts at the end of each section. She even includes some information about the metro system, which undoubtedly is the easiest way to get around the city. I highly recommend this guide for families who are planning a trip to Washington, DC. Children and adults will enjoy it.

I got this book when it was free because I wanted a Washington DC travel book and it has some interesting information in it.

I had the chance to read this to my 5 year old last night. She has learned plenty about Washington DC from board books and school, but not in much detail.The combination of real photos the fact that we got to read this on our iPad kept her attention more than I had expected. Some of the content was a bit advanced for 5, but it helped us have some good discussion as a result. Happy I picked this up.

I am so glad I got this book. As an avid gardener I am always searching for ways to preserve and save food for the off growing season. This book has so much good information in it. It covers Food Drying Methods (including solar), freeze drying, drying times & temps, directions by vegetable or fruit types, drying herbs & spices, making fruit leathers, drying meat & fish, etc. This is by far the best food preservation book on my Kindle.It is packed with useful information, well written and easy to navigate. This book has everything you need to know to safely and effectively dry food. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn to dry food or become advanced in drying their own food. I think this is a must have for every gardener! :) I'm actually gonna buy the paperback version too.

This book was a very big disappointment. Written in very simplistic terms with very little helpful info. I had researched a few blogs before buying my food dehydrator and then ordered this book. If you buy a new dehydrator, your booklet will offer more details and hints than this book does. If you get one used spend 20 minutes online and your knowledge will exceed what is written in this book. Also a famous video site has lots of do it yourself insights if you need more.Seriously, I am surprised the publisher printed this "booklet" because even a teenager could put together a better "book report".Simply stated this book lacks any useful insights or details that can easily accessed via your local library, a friend or a search online.

This is a fantastic book on drying foods, a truly great resource. It's very well-written and easy to read and understand. There are recipes as well as how to build drying equipment along with charts on drying times for any vegetable or fruit you can dry. I highly recommend this resource.

This book has become my go to for dehydration. It starts with a great explanation of how to dehydrate and what it is all about. It breaks down vegetables and fruit in different chapters explaining how to dehydrate with different methods,Times,etc. I have looked for books and finally , this one was for me! Love it.

It also includes reviews of orchid growing containers and how to clean them, growing medium, and light requirements for the common orchid groups, and much more. I appreciate this book so much. Very glad to have purchased before attempting to buy and maintain orchids. I actually changed my mind, for the time being, as I am now able to critique orchards at shops and big box stores. And heavens so, the poor beauties are normally on terrible condition. Advice given by workers in the store is usually wrong. Ice cubes in the soil is wrong!!Plus I now know about the correct conditions, location in my home and how to water, re-pot and provide adequate rainforest conditions. Very interesting and do-able. The varieties, beautiful pictures and decorative ideas are also great.Glad I didn t jump in without reading this book!! Unfortunately, I really have no suitable room in my present home, but that doesn't mean at some point the demographics won't change. Knowledge is power!

I bought this because I wanted real information about orchids - specifically how much to water them, and how to tell if you are over or underwatering. There were lots of pictures, but little factual information.

An easy to follow book for the beginner (like me) who wants to be successful growing orchids... I have failed before! I even bought another copy to give a friend who is a beginner too. We both caught the 'orchid bug' at a local orchid show in the Chicago area. It will become my go-to book!

Dr. Thomas is building up a delightful corpus of books on various problems in physics and cosmology all centered around the theme of finding solutions based on new ways of looking at what we already know. In this book, the focus is the fine tuning of the cosmological settings, the various dimensionless numbers that represent ratios between forces and weights that underlie the specific nature and physical stability of the cosmos. The particular settings we find in our universe produce conditions that make it possible for life (and consciousness) to emerge in pockets where local conditions happen to be particularly favorable. Not every star has planets capable of supporting life, but however few or many of these stars there are, if the various forces and constants of universe (gravity, electromagnetism, the strong and weak nuclear forces, and the cosmological constant in particular) had come out differently there wouldn't be any life sustaining conditions anywhere.He begins with a look at the numbers at issue, and then moves on to various sorts of explanations and pseudo-explanations like "the anthropic principle" and the multiverse. Moving from the cosmological to the more local, the appearance of life on planets, he covers a methodology, Bayesian inference in probability theory that he suggests will help us decide if there was fine tuning (or at least the appearance of fine tuning) or if life is so common that a variety of force settings and local conditions might accommodate it. He concludes here that the "life sustaining" conditions we know locally (Earth being in the sun's "Goldilocks zone", the sun being in the galaxy's best zone for stable long lived stars) at the local level do seem rather lucky.Returning to the larger theme of the cosmological constants Dr. Thomas tells us that the right way to look at the underlying physics of the universe is Quantum Field Theory (QFT) and in particular the "field view" (credit Paul Dirac) of QFT. The "field view" allows us to describe quantum behavior that appears mysterious in traditional QM. The first QFT chapter discuss the difference between the four most fundamental forces viewed as fields pervading the entire universe. In the second QFT chapter he turns to the particle view of QFT (credit Richard Feynman) because, Thomas explains, it is easier to describe. He gives a good explanation of Feynman diagrams including how they are used to calculate quantum probabilities incorporating all the behaviors accommodated by the field view. This is the nicest explanation of this process I've seen in a lay book. Thomas then examines the idea of "naturalness" and what physics would be like if all the forces had the same values. The universe would fall out of the laws alone there being no "special numbers" to plug into the equations. This is a key idea for him because it turns out there was a time when this was the case, the "Planck Era" literally the first Planck time following the big bang.In his last chapter, Thomas shifts to explaining just one of the present "great mysteries" of physics, why gravity is so weak compared to the other 3 forces. He reviews alternative explanations (string theory, super-symmetry, and the role of inflation) and then proposes one of his own that is simpler and avoids problems with the alternatives; a solution "in plain sight". He begins by assuming that the forces, once set, have not changed. In his view, in the first Planck-time the four forces were perfectly unified but gravity separated from the other three at a higher temperature 10^19 deg. K while the others broke apart a few planck-times later at roughly 10^17 deg. K (strong nuclear force) and 10^16 deg. K (electromagnetism and weak nuclear force). This has consequences due to the kinetic energy difference of the entire mass-energy constituents of the universe between those temperatures. In effect, as the universe cooled, it became lighter. It retained all the "rest mass" it had in the "Planck Era" (that first Planck-time), but the kinetic energy of that mass keeps falling as the universe expands and cools making the universe as a whole progressively lighter (thanks to E=mc^2 because m=E/c^2 so as kinetic energy drops, m gets smaller).Although a great solution to the question of the strength of gravity compared to the other forces, it still doesn't answer the question of why any of the forces have precisely the values they do. Why did gravity separate at 10^19 and not a little higher or lower? Why did the other three forces separate where they did and not a bit higher or lower? Thomas' hypothesis accounts for the ratios between the forces, but not their absolute values. He says as much and notes that it may never be possible to know exactly why the separations occurred exactly where they did. For one reason or another, it seems we do live in a special universe.An easy read, well written, another brick in the edifice Dr. Thomas seems to be weaving through his now 7 "Hidden in Plain Sight" books.

The book by Andrew Thomas seems to suggest that the universe simply hast to be the way it is out of logical necessity, although the details are left as an exercise for the reader, as my college textbooks used to say.The book starts out with brief explanations of the weak and strong anthropic principle. The weak version is a tautology that explains why intelligent organisms – such as us – are found on Earth instead of, say, in the center of the galaxy, a place totally inhospitable to any kind of life, intelligent or otherwise.. The strong version tries to explain why any life is found in this universe, given the "improbability" that six universal physical constants have to be within ridiculously tight ranges of values for there to be any chance of life. Some authors conclude that there must be an infinite number of "other" universes in order for that to happen. Thank you, Dr. Thomas, for NOT falling into that lazy trap. [The only way for the constants to be "improbable" in the first place is to presuppose the existence of other universes with randomly-generated constants. Thus that argument for a multiverse based on "fine tuning" is circular logic.]Dr. Thomas covers Bayes' Theorem pretty well, although I'm not sure exactly why he covered that topic, as it doesn't add anything to the premise of the book, which is that the physical laws and their constants are not random, thus probability cannot be used to explain them. [I've read other authors, who use a pseudo-bayesian analysis to justify a multiverse, but again, one must presuppose the existences of multiple universes in order to define the conditional probability P(L|M) in the Bayes' formula, i.e. the probability of complex life GIVEN that a multiverse already exists. Of course this makes the entire argument circular. I commend Dr. Thomas for not following the herd of physicists who committed the logical fallacy of Appeal to Ignorance by stating we must live in a "bubble universe" simply because we don't have any other explanation for why we're here.]The book goes on to present the Drake Equation, quantum field theory, quantum mechanics, Hilbert and Fock spaces, Feynman diagrams, string theory and more. Wow! Quite a range of topics indeed, and well explained. It turns out that the key to explaining the apparent fine-tuning has to do with the weakness of gravity compared to the other three physical constants when they are expressed in natural units. At least that's what Dr. Thomas believes, and he could be right. But as I said before, the details were left as an exercise for the reader. Maybe the solution will be given in "Hidden in Plain Sight 8."This is a fine book. It's short an to the point, but I wish it went further, so let this reader try to complete the exercise. Dr. Thomas describes the hierarchy problem as a huge order-of-magnitude difference in two dimensionless constants that both have to be within very narrow ranges for stars, chemistry and life to exist. He goes on to explain that in its initial state, all forces and particles were indistinguishable because the temperature was on the order of 10^32 Kelvin. Due to their enormous energies, the effective masses of the elementary particles approached the Planck mass, making the gravitational attraction between two electrons on a par with their electric repulsion. Thus, there was no hierarchy problem in the universe in its initial state. However, as the universe expanded and cooled, the energies and masses of the particles reduced by many orders of magnitude. Where did all that mass-energy go? The key is that gravity also reduced because the particles were less massive and farther apart. The thing to remember is that gravitational energy is negative, so as total mass-energy became less positive, total gravitational energy became less negative by precisely the same amount. The constant G has a value that assures that the reduction in positive mass-energy is precisely canceled by a weakening negative gravitational energy. I have read several books by Andrew Thomas and as always he never disappoints you.In this particular work, Thomas tells you the story of the construction of the atomic bomb but with a twist (a bonus track): how much and how little the guys who did it knew about it. They knew the physics (obviously) but they didn't know what was going to happen with the stuff. Everyone would want to have one in the locker. Just in case. And that was a big issue. In fact, it is. So...Thomas illustrates the book with a whole package of anecdotes and stories that enhance the possibilities of the book. He does not artificially lengthen the story. Far from that. The book is short enough to be read in a day so the secret is not only the bomb, is how to tell the tale. The book has several photographs and links for you to see including some videos in You Tube (even one starred by the author himself).In a phrase: the book is entertained. You want to finish it and also you want not to. Sounds like a cliché but it's true. You are not to going to forget some passages and images, believe me. Some are remarkable.And for the recipe to build the bomb and all that jazz, I'm not the guy, Thomas is.More than the money you need the time. And not so much.A very, very good book. And now I'm expecting the next one. I'm sure it will be (like this) a five star work.

As a practicing psychotherapist I found Dr. Anodea Judith’s newest book not only helpful in my work but I think it should be required reading for beginning psychotherapists. I found her description of the concept of “charge” to be very useful in the work I do with couples and also in treating trauma survivors. I also like her use of the chakra system and I find that very helpful in my work as well. An easy to read and comprehend book with great exercises at the end of each chapter.

It really took talk therapy to a new level that allows us to not only open our thoughts but our physical and energy bodies. It allowed me to recognize my own holding pattern and provided charging and discharging exercises to help manage my mood swings. I couldn't recommend this book more highly and have already bought a copy for everyone I know.

Fairly easy to read and I appreciate many new concepts in book about different energy chakras. A lot of these concepts are not part of western culture, such as letting our charge through and not blocking it. Kind of difficult to see the images in kindle version, but definitely recommend to give it a read.

Important information about the body's energy centers discussed in terms that are very relatable. A good resource for learning to mindfully process emotions that we all experience.

It was fascinating learning about charge and how it correlates to emotions - there is so much to learn. I attended her workshop last weekend in Seattle at EastWest bookstore that is based on this book and it was powerful and profound going through the "charge" exercises! I purchased the book right before class and it is filling in and providing depth and insight into what we learned in class. She is a delightful teacher as well. Get the book and attend a workshop if you can.
